buy this book. I got it last year and I am reading it again for the second time. Every bowhunter should read it. IMO, Paul Schafer was the best bow hunter to ever live.. He was a natural... he was an amazing shot, great bowyer, and an excellent all around hunter.. I waited about 5-6 for it to be completed. The author is now the owner of Paul's Silvertip recurve bow company and he's a damn fine fella.. http://www.schafersilvertipbows.com/bookstore/kyxbp2yuqcqa9yf9g0li9mhqiwccng#:~:text=Hunter and Bowyer-,SILVERTIP: The Life and Adventures of Paul Schafer,Master Bow Hunter and Bowyer&text=Silvertip is a careful account, birth to his untimely death
Sounds like you're describing Fred Bear, who would get my vote as the best bow hunter to ever live. I also believe he contributed more to the sport than any other bow hunter. jmo
well fred bear is in another galaxy compared to anyone. But Paul was a man a meager means and he wasn't always the most well behaved cat, but damn he killed some animals. he did so with the most natural ability. just read up on him and you will see. shooting a through camera lenses at 90 yds with a recurve is pretty impressive... all for a 10$ bet.. yeh, shoot a 200$ camera to win 10$...stupid, but he did it. he also could hold his 90# recurve out in front of him sideways and come to full draw just to check the knock point... a man of great strength, and extremely humble.
Hmmm. I watched Byron Ferguson hit a drop of water in midair. Been around archery off and on for years and never heard of Paul Shafer. Will Google and see what it's all about. Shooting a $200 camera for $10 sounds like the statement- Climbing a greased flagpole for $10 and ruining a pair of $20 pants.
look him up...not a whole lot on him,, here ya go http://www.schafersilvertipbows.com/bowhunter-of-bowhunters-by-bart-schleyer Bart, who this article above was a friend of Paul, he was tragically killed in 2004 in the Yukon on a solo moose hunt..eaten by a grizzly bear. https://www.grandviewoutdoors.com/bowhunting/paul-schafer-part-1
Vabowman, many, many thanks for the links. It is tragic that Paul went through so many dangerous things while hunting and was killed in a skiing accident. I belonged to a bass fishing club in LA. One guy had a compound bow that had a 90# DW. Only one could pull to full draw which, due to the time frame, was 50-65% let-off. I couldn't even budge it. When I belonged to an archery club in KY, a fellow was a semi-pro with one of the archery companies. He saw Fred Bear at a trade show. Fred had on a snug polo shirt- fellow said when Fred moved, the muscles in his back looked like steel cables. Heard that Fred used a 90# recurve for big game. Anyone know of this?
