Do you think the US will have a SHTF incident within the next 50 years?

I don't know what to think about SHTF happening in the next 50 years? I guess I just hope for the best. If you asked this question to people 50 yrs ago many of them probably would have said the end of the world would have happened by now?

I believe a SHTF event is very likely on a local/regional level. Not necessarily a national TEOTWAWKI event but I wouldn't be surprised. We're much closer to that cliff than most would like to believe.

I'm thinking something more along the lines of a nuclear plant attack/meltdown. Those are the softest targets out there with the biggest potential for disaster.

The next biggest threat is a cyber attack to electrical grids, financial institutions, or mass transit system controls.

Personally I think that a situation of that magnitude can only be caused by a simultaneous cyber attack on many of our critical systems by terrorists. I see that as our biggest vulnerability right now.

Besides natural disaster, how does a food, finance, or energy crisis NOT have something to do with how we are "progressing" as a nation? The progressive mindset and lifestyle is directly affecting those resources. The progressive government and attitude of many Americans is that people deserve those things for free rather than earning or working for them. They are clouding resources with rights, they don't have a true understanding of "pursuit of happiness". Whether by means of unemployment and redistribution of wealth or people live outside their means because the government allows it to happen and exploits those who don't live outside their means to pay for the ones who do. All of those scenarios leads to a bigger government with more handouts, which leads to debt, which ultimately leads to the government's inability to provide those handouts, and with that comes civil unrest. If they are unable to provide the handouts for the growing number of those on the government teat, eventually there will be rioting and crime will skyrocket. Rioting and national crime waves could result in government intervention such as marshal law, thus possibly leading to a civil war of sorts. I say it has everything to do with how our nation is "progressing". When the % of debt to GDP is where it is, inflation and growth become a huge issue. This can affect our nation's credit rating and could halt the willingness of other countries to purchase our debt without being paid a higher interest rate to account for the increased risk of default. This is an even bigger problem than inflation or slow economic growth. The question is, are we as a nation finally starting to open our eyes and see that only freedom and liberty can save us.

I dont think so. I think people like normal too much to allow a crazy change. Because of that...SHTF will not happen.

I think this is dead on. I would put natural events like Sandy that just brushed NYC, Fukushima, Indian Ocean tsunami in this category. However middle east turmoil, rougue nation, more grief from hacking or other economic problem isn't out of the realm of possibility.

I was not expecting so many people to think something is going to happen.

Personally, I do not believe anything will come in the next 50 years - But who knows!

Natural disaster would be the thing I worry about over economic collapse, etc.

Because all of those things could happen today, no matter what our government does. Could our government's policies make things worse? Sure. But, we don't need government to change to cause them to happen.

Once the west ceases to be dependent on middle-eastern oil, which is already happening, the civilized world's tolerance for that entire region will be slim and things could get very interesting. There will be global sweep of all nations that make threats and refuse real diplomatic relations. They will be dealt with harshly. I just think that civilized nations will refuse to allow 3% of the world's population continue to reek 95% of the world's havoc.

ok first let me state that I am a Iraq war vet, served 7 years in the army...im not a nut job, this is just my opinion!!!

SHTF from terrorists I believe. we are not even close to being safe/prepared/guarded from these attacks. smoke and mirrors to the public to make us feel safe..it's just an illusion! the sad fact is, these terrorists are already here in the country, and the plans are in place. we will be hit were it hurts us the most.........I don't even want to say it cause it's that bad IMO.
I personally have seen the PURE HATE in the eyes of our enemy, and the lack of value of human life they have. they will gladly kill 3 of themselves to just hurt one of us. scary stuff...and it's as REAL AS IT GETS!!!! it's already here, everyday threats, every day attempts, it's eventually gonna get through our "homeland security" just a matter of time. do you really think your told of all the attempts and plans on the news?

again, im not a loony!!! LOL

Hooker: no bunker yet. I've thought about one, just in case of tornadoes though.

The only thing I can continue see hitting the fan is the continuing assault on the common, everyday, American taxpayer at the hands of people voting in politicians who are trying to change the very fabric of our country. No I am not talking about gays getting married or about legalizing marijuana. I am talking about how the good, hardworking people of the U.S. are getting financially mauled by the U.S. government. The average, common man and woman have to bare the brunt of lazy people, criminals, and others who think we owe them something. I don't know how our country changed so rapidly, from the early 1900's to now. Men and women worked hard to get the good things in life and did not have to worry about having to give their hard earned money over to the government in order to support people they did not support morally, ethically, or otherwise at such horribly high rates. I could go on and on but no one really cares what I have to say so screw it. I try to forget about it most days because it is highly irritating.

I would say it had more to do with the natural disaster and everything else we've had happen in last 5-10 years that made people wake up and realize the goverment isn't goin to help you like they thought. That type of stuff probably brought on shows like that more than the show brought on the discussion.

I'm not very old, almost 30, but I can remember when people were a little more self reliante, now they think the world is ending if there cell phone has no service or starbucks is out of their favorite drink. Think we'd be better off if a few more had to fend for themselves and stop leeching off everybody else or the goverment.
