I use gasolin as a sent blocker but seriously it's probably not a good idea, I think alot of the sent we humans give off and how deer react to it all comes down to how much hunting pressure the deer in said area have had. I also believe that once a deer identifies a sent with a human or a predator it is likely that deer will try very hard to avoid it. I even believe it's possible for a deer to identify YOU by a smell you give off after too many visits to a stand and being busted without knowing it.
I don't but know guys that do and they kill deer and some nice bucks. If the wind is right the wind is right.
A couple of my cousins have had to put their smokes out just to shoot at a deer. Now I'm not saying it's a good idea to spark one up, but people I know have done it with no ill effects. I just chew while in stand, grizzly natural long cut. Also, they killed those deer in question on private land with very little hunting pressure.
I wouldn't light one up in a hunt, I don't see it being a great idea since the smell of smoke can be strong and not natural to the environment your hunting and scare off the deer. If you really need a nic fix get a can of Skol and if you wanna keep it easy and clean they make pouches now too. But If you have a few seconds to shoot and you drop a lit cigarette what if it starts a small fire? these are just maybes but that's just my opinion.
Agree 100%. I smoke a few on every hunt. I'm a smoker and that's what they do. I think the movements associated with smoking are more likely to get you busted than the smoke itself. I do keep it to a minimum though, and kill deer every year. Play the wind and you're good.
Smoke has to settle somewhere. If it happens to be where that big one is coming through you most likely won't see him. With that being said I have smoked in my tree stand and killed plenty of deer while doing it. But, I did start seeing bigger and more deer after I quit. edited to add.....It also depends on weather you are hunting big woods or backyard bucks.
Smoke Deer....I used to smoke in the tree but one day woke up and said, Self you will die slow smoking or today of Chantix OverDose....7 pills in 4 hours..and I have'nt had a Cowboy Killer in 3 years...started smoking cause lip was about to fall off from Coppey! TMI Now!!!! all I smoke is Four Legged Brown Delicious Critters....I'm so jacked up on Columbian Supremo I'm about ready to go Night Vision Ninja Warrior Style on them there Critters!
Gosh... maybe that is why I don't kill me no big bucks. I had to put down a cig to shoot this little buck at 12 yards. I couldn't get a shot at him when he was under 10 yards. Just finished one when I spotted this itty bitty buck at about 35 yards. A minute or 2 later he was at 8 yards. Killed him at 15 yards... A few minutes before this buck showed up and I passed on him at 25 yards... I was taking a leak and smoking at the same time ( I am a multi-tasker :p )... I passed on him because I was after this guy... I had 13 hunts in on him. A whole heck of a lot of smokes while waiting for him to show up. Then I whiff an easy 30 yard shot at him when he does show. Course I hunt on the ground and not 20 - 30 feet up in a tree. The smoke must effect them more when you in a tree... huh ??? Tim This post was made in fun. Seriously... I wished I would have never started smoking 30 years ago. Smoking sucks... don't ever start. It is not cool. It never was !! It is an ugly, money throwing away habit that isn't healthy for you nor for anyone around you. It is my biggest regret in life !! Trust me !!
and you want to know what is really sad. I can shoot bow while smoking a cig. I've killed a doe while smoking because I didn't have the time to put it down. 6 yard shot. I had another doe 10 yards behind me when I shot her. Tim
I have now quit, but have smoked and have had mature bucks come from the wrong direction and come to 10 yards while my smoke blew in there face. I believe smoking has no ill effects on your hunting, but don't recommend smoking to anyone.
I too have smoked when in a tree stand both for bow and gun seasons and have seen deer and shot deer. Like so many said before me, if the wind is right, the wind is right. I also hunt a working farm so that might make a difference, dunno?!?
I don't smoke anymore, but when I was a smoker (last year) I used dip instead. I have several friends that smoke in the stand, and it doesn't seem to affect them getting deer, as they usually kill out before the rest of us.
All the deer I shoot have black and white spots and make a noise..sorta like "mmmuuuooooww", This is why I never buy a call cause they don't make any that sound like that. I'll never understand why you guys settle for these whimpy tiny ones. now that's a trophy! Beautiful doe!
Tim, Nice deer...my mouth is watering...great hunter to do that on the ground smoking. You rock! Thanks for sharing. You definetly got it going on to do that...wind direction critical!!!!
