Do you seriously cut off ties with people in your private life over just one issue?

I hang out with a pretty right wing crowd at work, and most of them are really not offended at all by someone being gay. Now gay marriage is another topic. I was a long time "anti-gay" person.....I didn't hate them but I was seriously weirded out by their actions based on my upbringing. Then I looked to the one thing that could shed light on whether gay marriage should be allowed to be legal in this country.....The Constitution. I might not really like it personally, but who am I to stop someone from being happy and leading a fulfilled life just because their beliefs contradict a couple of the world's leading religions?

Most people my age "grow out" of gay bashing once they exit high school and enter college.

Gay marriage? Slightly differently topic. Still not a big deal anymore...

    Weed? Please.

Abortion? < now that will lose you friends quickly.

I would. He probably has some really interesting stories. I'd even have dinner with Bill Maher and Kanye West. At the same time. One of my best friends in college, who just happened to come out BTW, was a massive liberal. I enjoyed our debates.

Does it matter if he's gay? Because gay people aren't really people, so that wouldn't technically count.

Yeah, he does still look like a real person. That is strange. Hmmmm...how about "lesser" people?

He actually may be "greater" because he goes both ways.

I guess it would depend on what you define as a 'tie' and what the issue might be.

Here at the Compound we hang out mostly with like minded folks. :D

Now I have certain values that would make it pretty difficult to enjoy time with somebody who held strong opposite values. But cut off all ties? Probably not.
I work from a home office so my most irritating co-worker is myself. But if I learned that one of my 'co-workers' in the mothership office was a commie hunt saboteur, who sued gun-manufactuers when he/she wasn't performing partial-birth abortions or strangling puppies... I still wouldn't up and quit my job. But I'm not sending that person a Christmas card nor chit-chatting at the office party. ;) (in reality, the closest I come to interaction with people at my work is a paycheck, the yearly insurance juggle and a birthday card signed with names of people who may be completely ficticious for all I know.)

I never would.... but one of my friends did just that. He did something wrong that effected one of our group of 4 amigos. We had gathered for years. Then this guy did something he shouldn't have. Another of the 4 was effected in a way he couldn't help but address. The offending party decided that since the 3 of us were still friends... he cut all ties. We stopped by, wrote emails galore telling him how friendships as ours are too rare to piss away. I mean these two guys at lunch together every day for years. And BAM.... done....over. I still can't understand the logic. I just couldn't do something like that with someone I was friends with for decades. Makes no sense.

Rifle hunters! If you are a rifle hunter and I find out I'm so done!!

Long close friends and family, no I try not to let something bother me that bad. After all, if your close enough or a good enough person for me to have ties with in the first place then they are probably close enough to work through disagreements or just over look them anyways. If I'm in the process of getting to know someone and there are that many differences then I may just not continue to get closer to that person. I would still talk to them some, just not as much as a life long friend.

Something like homosexuality, if that's who you are then so be it. If my pastor can be friends with a man of the alternative lifestyle then why couldn't I.

I have family members who have done that to other family and because I am the child of or associate with, I no longer see them. I miss them and would love to talk to them but, they just won't. It sucks for sure.

If a buddy tells me that he hunts with a crossbow, then he is gay. So, ofcourse, I would never hang out with him again. I would forever fear that he might teabag me. Duh.....

That's it! I am cutting all ties because I suspect you are a rifle hunting homosexual that believes in abortion and prays to the devil himself.

For a blunt answer, yes. I have not spoken to my sister in 11 years now, rather not go into details though
