I was taking a little break at work this morning and checking out facebook. There was a guy from Illinois that posted his target buck on Jim Shockey's page, to which he shared. Doesn't this seem like a bad idea? There are a lot of people who think poaching is a sport and you just gave them a rough idea of the location of a massive buck. I realize the likelihood is very small, but now it exists.
I only have my bowhunting team on Facebook, I don't have a personal page myself. We do not post our hit list bucks.
Nope, that just opens up the land you thought only you had permission to hunt to a bunch of others that dont have permission to hunt it. I seen my buddies show me pics of their buddies, buddies deer they posted on facebook. If you show the worng person a big deer and they want to hunt that area now, in most cases hunters that have no morals will find a way to hunt that deer weather its at night or trespassing on days your not there, they'll find a way.
How do you think I feel both Justin and Richie made video's of our hit list bucks for the whole world to see on BHOD. Chances are small unless someone knows where you hunt and is a vagina cleaner.
I do not facebook. My wife and oldest daughter do. I can see the positives from a business standpoint, but I do ok without it and do not have to maintain it or deal with the potential negatives associated with it.
You really think that a FB post gives someone enough criteria to track down a specific buck?? Its not like you are posting GPS coordinates
I'm usually really hesitant to do it. I've done it in the past but the bigger ones I usually won't share. I'm also pretty careful of who has access to such things on my facebook page. I'm more likely to post there than I am on a site like bh.com though because at least I have some ability to restrict who can see on FB.
I`d rather post it on here than on fb, my hometown area where I hunt is full of night hunters that wouldn't be worried about checking out someone elses spot. I don't even tell people where im hunting!
Guess again. It does happen. I can tell you where dozens of guys bow-hunt and I am no exception for sure. Loose lips sink ships man. I would never move in on someone, but there are plenty of slobs that will. No offense, but I don't even post them up here. Its just not smart in my opinion. Especially if you own land. Its just that much easier for some lazy slob to mess you up.
Yea, if people have an idea where u hunt and u post pics of some good bucks they will be looking for them. Hometown people can usually keep track of that based on where u park to hunt etc.
I post - mostly because my bucks aren't crazy huge - If I had one that was truely something I'd keep it secret...
posting anything on FB is like walking into downtown NYC on new years eve with a giant billboard, & announcing to millions what you have, are doing, are thinking, etc..... It's no different than taking out an ad in the NY Times, or Washington Post. Unfortunately, too many people don't realize this. Im always amazed at how many will post personal thoughts or images that they really don't want the public to see yet, post them in a place where everyone & their dog can see em.
I totally agree with fletch on this one. I don't personally use facestalk, if I did I wouldn't post pics.
I tell you, I don't own the land that I hunt but the land owner lives on the property and he is kind enough to let me hunt and manage his property. Well from time he will give permission to some weekend warriors to come out and hunt. Here is what I have noticed - in the past I've sent him trail camera photos of some monster deer on his property, I'm quite sure he gets to showing people those deer (because he's proud of them) and next thing you know he has them asking him to hunt his property also. Now me being the one running cameras and putting in food plots and taking care of things - I am always the only one that ends up hunting the land on a regular basis. That all being said, I don't send my land owner pictures until after the season I make him a CD with all the trail camera photos. Nothing during the season!!
Why would you do that? I mean I'll show a couple buddies but I don't show off until I'm in the picture with him
That isn't necessarily true. You can manipulate the settings on your Facebook page so that only friends, and in some cases only certain friends, can see things you post. I don't post pictures for a couple of reasons, I don't get many good bucks and while it is cool to get them on a trail cam I'd rather post the hero shot of myself and the deer.
I don't very often, but I'm not too worried. 99% of poachers are far to lazy to really find the deer I'm after
While that is true for the most part....it's still possible somewhat. Ive seen pics of people's that have their FB on lockdown. All it takes is for someone to repost it, or comment on it & if they are in your friends list, you can see it. Thing is.....nothing is secure on the internet. How many times do you scroll through something randomly on the internet....say, looking at hunting calls, or scents.....then later, open your facebook. think it's a coincidence that there is now an ad for what you were searching earlier on your fb page..? I agree that there are different levels of "security" for fb & other internet sites. However, I really believe in not posting anything you don't want published to the world. Even though, it may not make it there....it IS possible. That's kinda my point. Not everyone has their stuff as secure as possible.
While I don't have Facebook anymore, I would never post trail cam pics when I did. I'm from a small town, and most people know my truck. Outside of a few close friends, I keep my cam pics under wraps.
