I live in Vermont, where the Fish and Game department doesn't have a clue. And I see some of the pictures you guys post here from your trail cameras. I envy some of you living in IL, KY, KS, MO, IA, WI, etc. I went out to Indiana last year and will be going back this year, but one week a year just leaves you wanting more. I have shot one 4 point buck (that's 4 total points) and maybe a dozen doe in 25 years of bowhunting Vermont. Anyway, if you live in a deer rich state, I hope you appreciate it. Good luck.
Thanks for the reminder. Your point is well taken. Sometimes folks take for granted the things that are present in our daily lives without given it much though.
Brother I appreciate it so much........I don't even own a trail camera, I take my own pics! I love being out there every chance I get and will continue to do so! I dig it!
Boy this guy is right. I grew up and learned how to hunt deer in VT. What county are you located in? I remember after leaving VT and coming to PA.........I couldn't believe how good the hunting was.......and that was before PA's antler restrictions. :D
I am blessed to have been raised in illinois and hunt in this state! I am one who will never give up when it comes to finding new land too hunt. I constantly search for different pieces of property that look awesome to hunt, I may get no's but you keep at it. I'm hoping to one day get the chance to hunt surrounding states, like iowa, minnesota, missouri, ohio and wisconsin. Some of these states I could have some farms to hunt, but with time and money it slows you down a bit. I just want to tell people that you have to keep after it, and believe me it will payoff sometime down the line!
I b!t(h and moan about the PA game commission and the number of hunters I have to compete with, but I am fully aware that I have it good here. I remember living in Florida and going months without seeing a single deer. I couldn't get back to the northeast fast enough. We are very fortunate here.
Agreed! But if nothing's holding you back...there's job openings everyday in IL...or better yet, go West and hunt all kinds of big game and never have to ask permission again with all the public access!
I live in Orange county which is in central VT. Up until 5 or 6 years ago you could drive around this small town at dusk and see 3 or 4 groups of say 3 or 4 deer. Now you can drive around and feel lucky to a single deer. But the F&G is handing out doe tags like candy. Anyway, I'm headed to Indiana in November. Maybe NH a bit. I hope you all have a good season. Happy hunting.
While having visited VT this past summer for the 1st time, I must say you live in a rather scenic state. I could understand your frustration about the deer population though. I hiked a lot up there and didn't see a deer, but did find some tracks. Probably found just as many moose tracks though! Sometimes you just have to take the hand that's dealt ya, or for the brave and willing, head to places that provide better opportunities. Either way it's difficult.
Michgain for all it's issues is still a great state to hunt, try a trade for a hunt in the midwest for all the maple syrup one can have
Sometimes when things keep going the wrong way with land access and hunting pressure I have to remind myself that things aren't as bad as they seem.
Heh.......I know exactly what your talking about then. I grew up hunting Rutland County in the Clarendon/Shrewsbury area. I remember as a kid the very best rifle hunters I knew were lucky to take a spike or crotch horn every season, had maybe one or two 2.5-3.5 y/o 8 pointers under their belt in a lifetime of hunting, and "big" bucks from the north country were measured by weight, not inches. I did manage to kill a lot of does and a handful of small bucks back then with both a bow and rifle. Good years were the ones when you saw more than 3 or 4 deer in a full season and put something in the freezer. It's kind of sad.......with all the out of staters taking over, Vermont is a much different place now compared to when I grew up there 20 years ago. I still have a lot of family/friends in Rutland County, but haven't hunted there since 2004. I haven't lived there since 1995 or so.
