Do you think pop culture is relevant/important? Do you feel that a base knowledge of pop culture is needed to be successful in life? Do you enjoy making obscure pop culture references?

It is not relevant or important to me, however, I think it runs this world. I do not think it is important to be successful in life, but it does help with being a good conversationalist to people who think it is important. Just my .02.

So you think having knowledge of something that "runs the world" is not important?

Well its important in jobs. Having a successful career is due in large to being able to BS your way through the people that want the same thing. Being good at that requires you to know whats relevant in todays world, pop culture. So yes I think its relevant.

No, no, and no. To me anyway. I don't think Pop Culture and I have the same definition of success or relevance.

I am not very good at BS'ing with JackA's just to "get ahead" in the world. So no, pop culture and my ability to navigate through a fake conversation using it is not too important in my world.

Not a fan of it but working in the government you have to. They don't judge you on the way you work just the way you can have a fake conversation like you said. Its sad but its the difference between small and big paycheck.

As I get older, I find myself straying farther and farther away from caring.

Yes I watch it and keep up with it, probably more so than I'd like to admit. It's absolutely not important to my success in life, however, neither is this forum but I keep up with it as well :)

Well then, pop culture has not been relevant/important in my life and I have been pretty successful. Sometimes I wonder what people are talking about when they make obscure pop culture references but not enough to ask what they are talking about.

I've worked in the government for the past six years. I won't have a "fake" conversation with anyone. If someone asks me a question or involves me in a conversation, then I speak the truth and don't feel like I have to know about "The Dog Whisperer" or the latest musical sensation in order to fit in. I see so many people talking about the dumbest crap in the world because they think it makes them look or sound cool, when in reality they sound dumb because they are faking it. Be real, be honest, and you are friend of mine. Now if you really like pop culture and are for real with your opinions, cool with me.

And I respect you for being that way..

 The Dog whisperer is very important to our lives. But I guess I saw pop culture and ran with it. Trends are really not my thing but I LOVE real music and knowing what is going on in the world so I will include myself in the culture based on that.

I don't mind keeping up on movies, music and TV shows, but when reality stars and individual celebraties garner too much attention I totally tune out. I don't care, at all.
In my day to day life I don't need to know anything about pop culture to get thru. Most of who I work with are old crotchety guys that don't know or care either.

I don't keep up with much celebrity gossip, but I do follow most mainstream sports and movies, love most music (well let me rephrase, I love anything Hooker wouldn't listen to), and follow twitter. Guess I'm a sellout.:(

Not really. My definition of running the world is that most people are fascinated with things like the Kardashians, reality shows and allow these things to dictate their lives. I do not do this nor do I think you need to know about them to get ahead in life or be successful. Most people eat and breathe this stuff but it has no relevance in the REAL world. I hope that I am being clear...

    Great topic BTW.
