I have the same grayling jig going on 10 years now. Its paid for itself bigtime! I enjoy fletching my own and my sons arrows! I refuse to pay extra or someone to do it for me! As much as I shoot year round it would cost me a pretty penny to pay someone to fletch em' for me.
The first Job I ever had was in an Archery shop and that was one of my chores, had to dip and crest them also, That was 40 years ago.
I had a buddy buy a dozen of the same arrows I shoot, he bought the pre rolled at $120 a dozen, I paid $69 for bare shafts cut to length and fletch them how I want! For the money I saved I can buy enough feathers that will do at least 4+ dozen or more arrows.
I tried some of those pre made ones (that you put in boiling water) for my target arrows. it was really easy to use, but did not last very long, only about a month of shooting every other day. (using a wiskerbisket, might last longer with a different rest)
I have been doing my own for a couple years now. I use the red plastic Bohning jig and it has served me well so far! I have only fletched blazers and I am even able to put a slight twist on them as well with the jig! I will try to post a pic...? It looks like my arrows come from a circus because I just use all sots of variations of colors..haha!
My pro shop is 60 miles away so I bought a Jo-Jan jig and I've been doing mine and my wifes for over a year. I enjoy it....gives me a chance to experiment a little and I think I do a pretty decent job. The Jo-Jan wasn't expensive and does a great job. Recently began adding wraps to customize a little more. The jig has more than paid for itself in travel time.
I do my own but it isn't because I enjoy fletching... I just don't trust anyone else to setup or work on any of my equipment. If I ever have a failure, it isn't because someone else screwed me.
I usually take a day and hit up my buddy's shop to fletch my own. I swear, some of the local schmucks act like fletching glue is $95-a-tube, the way they ration it. If I know somebody is doing a good job, they can fletch for me, as I absolutely loathe fletching arrows. Problem is, finding somebody who does a good job.
