That piece of paper is hardly worthless. It's (on avg) worth 20% more than what the people who don't have one are making. It's also a key that opens doors that are off-limits to others (in many instances).

I think everyone should have ownership in their degree. I paid for all my credit hours by working and saving and student loans. I went to a small private college that was not cheap. My folks helped with part of the room and board and expenses. About 85% was on me. I saw plenty of kids that had an open checkbook from Mom and Dad and got little to nothing out of college. Several didnt even finish. Without ownership, you just cant appreciate it in my opinion. If you really want your child to be successful, let them learn that it takes hard work and discipline. I know college is a lot more expensive now, maybe a 50/50 split would be appropriate. But they defininely need to have ownership.

My ownership was football, nearly 250-300+ workouts/training/film a year throughout the year. I did work in the summers, took classes, and trained 5 days a week, sometimes twice a day. I really respect you guys that worked in other capacities throughout your college careers. It is not easy.

The economy is so tight in the area in which I live and work that if you do not have your college degree and are applying for a decent job, chances are you are not even going to get your foot in the door.

Bachelor degrees are the equivalent of a HS diploma these days. Everybody is getting bachelor degrees these day, which in turn is lowering their value.

You almost have to have Masters degree and a few summer internships in your field for most degrees to be assured a job straight out of college.

You completely missed the point, the ones that bump the average are the ones that had a purpose and actually had a major that PAYS.

Many majors do not pay.My wife had a Bachelors and came out of college and all she could get with that major was a $5.00 an hour job. That job also had no growth opportunity so back to school she went and got an associates in a major that payed several time more.(she just now finished her LPN and is now bridging that into the RN program, this should pay even more than she gets now even if she doesn't change the job she has now, surgical tech)

Hell I work with many that have a higher college degree than I do and I make more than they do.

I do feel education is paramount in this society and economy these days but just going to college isn't going to do it by itself.

    Cool...

My only point was....2 people (one college graduate....one not) doing the same job.....the college graduate (BS Degree in anything) will make 20% more - on avg..

Master degrees are worthless in my field, you need certifications.

    MCSD
    MCSE
    MCDD

    SEO Cert

Are a few I have, the above is about 25,000 added to my worth.

We have people with Masters degrees being hired at my job lately. Just 4-5 years ago people with highschool diplomas were sometimes being hired. They WILL NOT hire anyone these days at my work without a college degree. They are receiving 300-400 job applications per open position lately. They have room to be picky about who they want to work.

Being realistic. They usually aren't doing the same job.

Nowadays you need to stand out from the crowd.

How do you get certifications? Testing? Field time? Degrees?

    Mine too.

    Apprentice--Journyman--Master

It does help if you get certifications for safety, from companys (like wirsbo) to install their product, safety certifications, etc.

    :D

I personally feel the gift of gab is way underated. I feel if one is able to communicate and get their point across with confidence, that goes a long way toward being successful. That is not to say education isn't important but being able to communicate is extremely important imo.

I like this train of thought. I will help but my boys will also be a part of "earning" everything they get out of this life, including their college.
