I've done maybe 2 hours of legit work this week. And most of that legit work was just phone call and a few e-mails. Since I'm salary, I'm still getting paid for 40 hours. Now I usually only do about 4 hours of legit work a day and I have no problems with that whatsoever. I consider it a perk of the job. But only 2 hours the entire week? I kinda feel guilty. Not to mention how the days drag when I'm just perched behind the screen, checking the same websites over and over again. So is this a problem for anyone else? Or am I complaining about a luxury that most people do not have?
bingo, lol... I'd venture that most would love that problem, you don't happen to work for the govt do you? Lmao
I'm getting paid to sit on my couch right now as I type this....I don't feel guilty one bit...its "pays" to be proficient....but...I'm sure a few here would disagree with this! LOL!
At what point are you not needed? Do they need a person in your position? Could you look for more job responsibilities? It does not seem sustainable to me for this to continue in the long term.
Nope, Impossible for me to do with the job I have. When I worked for the government (county job) most of my co-workers did little as possible to get through our 8 hours. I did the same for the 1st couple days after I was hired on but after that I couldn't take It anymore. I felt guilty and plus I'm not one to sit around, I like to keep busy. Each to their own.
If my boss and the powers that be were aware I had little to do at work AND they are okay with it, then I would not feel guilty. Obviously that is in the plan for the company and you provide a valuable service even though it doesn't include much for time worked. If you have little to do and your boss thinks you do have things to work on then I would feel guilty and I would ask for something more to do. Just my 2 cents.
Joe, I thought you were going to say it "Pays" to be union !! Anyways, I can sit here all day long and do nothing, but since I am on straight commission, the only way I get paid is if I sell something !!! I think all people should at one point in their life be required to get paid this way.....it would sure weed out the slackers !!
I used to be in the same position as you Hook, but after taking a new job with more pay and more responsibilities I look back and am glad I'm not doing that anymore. For me, time goes by much quicker when you keep busy and I feel like I achieved something for the amount of money they pay me.
I suppose if I had work to do and was not doing it, I would feel guilty. On the other hand, If I'm not doing anything because I have nothing to do, I might be a little apprehensive about my employer finding someone else to not do what I'm not doing for less money. :D
Same here. If I wanted, I could do nothing at work, but those would be the longest, most boring days of my life. That don't work for me.
Some weeks I am in that exact boat. It gets old & boring fast. When I have work, I don't play around. But sometimes we go thru a stretch where there really ain't anything to do. My boss just has nothing more to give me. Boring days drag way too long.
I'm the only project scientist in the office, so yes, I am needed. I could, and have, but consulting is a rather competitive atmosphere. We always have pressure to keep our billable percentage as high as possible, therefore, no one wants to give anyone else there work. And since my office is full of very specific skilled positioned, it's somewhat difficult to just jump into another project. I have my projects, the geologists, chemists, and biologists have their projects. The reason why I'm slow this week (and a few previous weeks) is because we as a company just lost ConocoPhillips as a client. I was the CoP manager in this office. CoP took up 80% of my workload. Now all I have are a few smaller clients. My boss has assured me that I will be put on other projects, but at the moment, I do not have much to do. This should be only temporary.
I just approved an invoice through an e-mail with "approved". I think I'll bill an hour for that project. Phew...I was productive today.
Well then, you've gotten more accomplished than our entire legislative and executive branches of government today! (and you cost far less... )
Same for me - and those that take pride in it will come to a rude awakening soon. Slacking disgusts me. Its not proficient, its free loading.
Knowing this, guilty isn't what I would feel. Maybe a little nervous. I could be way less productive at work than I an now and still get by but I just dont function that way. I enjoy getting things done but with the weather getting nice out, it was a little hard to stay at work today.
