I was talking with my family last night at dinner about donating some of the deer that we will kill this year. I dont know of any programs around where I live that have a place I could do that. But I am sure there is somewhere. How many of you donate a deer or many deer?

We don't donate any of our deer, but I know people that do. HUSH is the program in Iowa for donating deer. I'm guessing it is state specific.

Illinois is Hunters Feeding the Hungry. I have donated deer in the past, but recently I have numerous family members who want deer so I usually give them to them.

I don't donate to any programs, but I give my girlfriend's family a deer, two of the guys that let me hunt get a deer apiece, and I keep the rest.

Same here. Kansas doesn't have a program that I am aware of. Friends and family often get some of my harvest as well as the land owners that allow me to hunt their land. I also give a gift basket full of other stuff to them every year. Often includes gloves, flashlights, knifes, multi-tools, hand sanitizer, wipes, baked goods, candy... ect.....

I've thought about this. If you contact your conservation dept, they'll tell you how/if/where, etc.

I usually donate several each year. Privately to families that can use it, and also to the state program. We really need to kill a lot of does and its a great way to make sure they are utilized.

I've donated to the state program here in Ohio (can't remember which one) as well as dropped off processed venison to one of the local homeless shelters.

One deer a year will feed me until the following season. My wife isn't a huge fan of venison and neither is my family, so it's only me and a few of my neighbors. Once I ask around and fill the freezers of anybody that requests meat, I will donate the rest. My processor here in MD (Austin's) participates in Hunters Helping the Homeless and all I have to do is field dress it and drop it off with my tag. I think it's a great program and I try and do my part to help out.

I am hunting land that seem to have an abundent amount of doe, I usually shoot one for the sole purpose of donating it. I am also in MD and think the Hunters helping the Homeless program is a worth while effort. Most states have a similiar program, if you have excess meat I would encourage each of you to donate.

Thanks guys I will be giving away alot this year. The state allows us to kill 5 deer a year and with three hunters in my family that fills a house fast. I always give to the land owner but still have a lot left over. So I'm going to give out thanks again

Virginia has Hunters for the Hungry which distributed over 400,000 lbs of venison to the hungry last year. If I don't get a deer to donate, I will donate some cash.

Donating is a great way to help others in need. In PA our donations go to the homeless. Bring your deer to the butcher, they do the rest.

I have before and will again. As sad as it is to say it, I donate on out of state trips to save myself the headache/money of shipping all the meat home. I would in a heartbeat if there wasn't somewhere for my meat to go, but if I fly to a hunt I try and find a local who would love to have the meat.

In Wisconsin, the program is called "Hunt for the Hungry" -- same concept as OldDog19 described -- just tag and field dress the animal and find an official "drop" site.

I just donated a deer last weekend to the program around here. Illinois Sportsmen Against Hunger. It's a good program. Local processing, and the meat goes to a local food pantry for distribution. Feels good to be able to help people that need it when I have extra :)
