In this conversation isn't the bible the "answer all"? I mean, that is what we are basing these answers off of, correct?

From what I have gathered by others on this site, the bible is up (for the most part) for your own personal interpretation. All religious followers came to their belief and understanding through the written scripture and formed ideas and conversations from there. What better way to learn on a religious subject than from the scripture itself.

But how do you get someone to start reading the bible in the first place? If you go out with the intention of trying to save someone who is a non-believer and is unfamiliar with the bible, it seems to me you'd have to start by explaining exactly what the bible is and why what's contained it it is valid.

Until you've accomplished that, all the verse quoting in the world isn't going to help. It would be like you asking me why my written instructions on how to build a nuclear reactor are any good and my only response to you is to keep quoting random specs that don't make any sense to you.

Tony, you and I both know that meant more than its literary translation.

I see what you're saying. But that answer is going to come down to who is asked. Personally, I'd rather come in the Lord on my own terms and learn at my own needs.

While his quoting of scripture was likely not turning anyone how can you, or anyone else, accost him for it? Shouldn't it, at that point, be your job as a person of god to step in where others have failed to further the education and understanding among all?

I'm sorry guys. The posts he has been posting have been really irritating and calling me lazy and thinking I haven't tried to become religious or read the bible really irked me. I will just try to ignore his posts which come off absolutely useless, but If he thinks he is helping, then we'll I guess he can live in his blissful ignorance.

I understand what you're saying. That's why I didn't "accost" him. (That's a cool word, by the way.) I think the reason that he caught grief in the end was that throughout almost the entire thread Chopayne kept asking him to just offer something besides quotes: An opinion or a statement. Something besides book, chapter and verse. Even some of those requests were replied to with a quote.

If you read the entire thread then you know that at this point in my life I most definitely do not consider myself a "man of God".

I have to agree with zedd the bible is open to infinite interpretations as evidenced by different sects. Telling me to read the bible is quite pointless since I would interpret it differently than the church who would have interpreted differently than someone 100 years ago.

To answer muzzyman I wasn't trying to say God does not exist if people sin. But I've heard and been told god has a plan for us. How can he be a Christian god and have a plan for us to divorce for reasons other than what the Bible allows?

It sounds like god is setting us up to fail or making us handicapped like with original sin?

Wasn't trying to be rude by telling you to ignore his posts. They are quite useless at times so I read past them.

God isn't setting us up for failure but is allowing us to make mistakes and learn from them ourselves. He doesn't want to have puppets, he wants us to follow him if we choose to. He is a forgiving God and he will forgive us for whatever we do as long as you are truly wanting forgivness.

I believe the 'truth' (please, I know, what is 'truth') can be found by reading scripture without the assistance of man. If one must go to another to get 'learned' interpretation, then would you not be susceptible to that persons ideology?
Were you a nuke in the navy?

Brutha from another mutha! Exactly! I think the plan for us here to be radically more simple than we make it... First person I have ever heard say what I think inside!

At great personal risk for doing so, I present 2 Peter 1:20... But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, True it does GET interpreted... but it was not given for that purpose.

Chop... God bless you... I sense you are one who really wants to understand... maybe even believe in time.
LC... Two thumbs up... great thread!
Germy... Classy question... Thanks for the chance to share.
And for the ones who added comic relief... you crack me up.

But I gotta go to Birmingham... Please add my dad to your prayers... they've been watching some spots on his lung for some time and he's been coughing a lot for several months. The spots have grown so we are going to have a PET scan this morning. Mom can not take care of herself so this could be touchy if he were sick too. Love you guys... I really do.... thanks for the prayers, Geoff
