I've never been a pee-from-the-stand guy myself. Although many people will argue over whether or not it alerts deer I don't see a need to test that theory for myself. My reasoning has always been that I spend far too much time trying to be scent free and playing to the wind to purposely leave a bunch of scent around my stands. Just never made much sense to me.
Not only do I pee from my stand, but I've been known to let a few buck snorts and grunts now and again as well. Can't say it has helped my chances, but it hasn't hurt them.
I don't pee if I can hold it but I'm not afraid to if need be. The hunting story that changed my outlook on peeing and pooping in the woods.: I was scouting in northern Wis during the rut. I went to check out an area where I knew a big one was hanging out. I'll try not to be too graphic but my guts were churning and I had to chap. I crapped at least 4 times all around the area. Then I hit some real hot sign and knew I had to hunt it right away. It was almost dark so I decided to be back at first light. I was very concerned about pooping all over but decided to go back and hunt it anyway. The next morning I was back and because the frosty leaves were so noisy I decided to grunt right away to fool the deer into thinking the noise was from a deer. I had a spike buck circle wide right away then a big buck came right in. Unfortunately my arrow did'nt hit it's mark. After that encounter I have never been afraid to pee or poop if necessary.
HAHA!! Too funny. I try not to go but if its bad enough to where it starts to make me twitch and move around and or get uncomfortable then I figure its time. I have done it before out of a tree over the years and have had deer walk right by it, even sniff it with no bad results. I have not however tried to pee on them like Ben, or go for a personal distance record like BigStick lol, you guys crack me up.
I pee from my stand and have no concerns with how it affects deer and this is why: One morning I had a bit too much to drink and really had to go. I held off as long as I could and when I couldn't stand it anymore I turned to go and there was a 2.5 year old buck heading my way. He hung around for a little while and was not a buck I wanted to shoot so as soon as he was out of sight I unzipped and let fly. The sound of my tinkle must've aroused his curiosity because he came right back in as I was finishing and promptly went to the base of my tree and stuck his nose in my puddle. Then he started looking around and made a half-hearted scrape right at the base of my tree. Since then I just pee when I have to and have had plenty of deer come by afterward and either sniffed and paid no mind or just not had any reaction to it at all. So either I am part deer and don't know about it or human urine has zero negative impact on deer. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
I used to be really worried about peeing in an area I was or planned on hunting. Now I'm not worried about it at all, but if I can hold it I just hold it. All of the mock scrapes I make I just pee in myself and they got hit pretty hard last year by both young and mature bucks.
