Hit a doe at 20 yards she was turing away from me. Got lungs and into the opposite shoulder. And when i looked at my arrow i saw that the bh was bent around 15 to 20 degress off. And split the arrow tip open. (Fmj). Now i shoot the fmj 340 tip with kz maxx. Outta my 70lbs spyder 30. Should i just accept the fack im gonna break a few arrow now and again. Oh she went 80 yards and piled up.
I know the FMJ's can bend due to the aluminum jacket on the outside. I've had to throw several away due to this. An easy way to check them is to roll them across a flat table with the tips out. You can easily check a regular carbon arrow by doing a "flex test". If you hear cracking or splinting, throw it away. The arrow of yours that had the tip split open might be able to be cut down an inch or so, but will probably fly slightly different than your others.
I dunno about the FMJs but out of three animals I shot w/ Carbon Express Maxxima Reds, 2/3 of the arrows busted right at the "flex zone" line just in front of the fletch.
Yep, your gonna bust some arrows. Just part of the deal. I'm not familiar with the FMJ's but you don't want to shoot a damaged carbon arrow. Bad things can happen!
If u end up with a shoulder shot, or any shot for that matter the the arrow doesn't pass through cleanly, it's more than likely going to get bent or break off. It's all just part of the game .
I never re use a arrow after a kill. I blew up my bow once using a finely cracked arrow. Never again.
Also, an "arrow spinner" will tell you if there's even a slight bend in an arrow. They are pretty cheap.
I have the shot the regular FMJ's and the Injexion FMJ's both in my opinion are two ultimate hunting arrows. Amazing flight and penetration, more than any carbon gives you; but, you will bend a few and if you hit something to close to hard the aluminum can split. If you don't mind paying for them, I would say get nothing else. This is why I switch to carbon Injexions. I was sick of paying for arrows that I bent. At least now they can only break, not bend. Regarding shoulder shots, you will almost always wreck an arrow and broadhead on shoulder shots. That's why I really try to stay clear of the shoulders. Pass thru is pretty much your only bet on saving an arrow. Sent from my IPhone 5S.
