I was able to complete a dream opening day of Pennsylvania archery bear season, but it was almost a disaster, this bear was shot with a Matthews vxr 67 lbs at 29 in I was shooting a 430 grain arrow tipped with a 100 grain Kreature broadhead. I shot the bear at 14 yards from my climber the arrow hit one rib did not open on entry penetrated 10 into the center of one lung and did not deploy... Luckily the shot was good enough and I kept eyes on the bear which only made it 100 yards uphill.. live weight 320 pounds 284 field dressed.. of course I wanted to post to brag a little but at the same time Warn others about this broadhead. You can see by the picture of the lung that is not a 2-in cut. I've seen a lot of videos and reviews on this head it seems like some lots of this head are extremely good, some lots the blade shear off, and in my case the retention clip in this pack I believe are too tight.

The picture does not align with the weight you claim.

Great looking bear. I switched off mech about 4 years ago and run annihilators now. They are fantastic. Let us what you switch to.

Sorry not sure if it is camera angle but the first picture did not look like a 300 pound bear. Was it a boar or a sow?

Explains the weight. Bear hunting is amazing, they move thru the woods like black smoke no breaking branches silent approach.

Those kreature heads always looked a little odd to me. I’ve use a bunch of different broad heads but the G5 deadmeats have been working like a charm this year. Congrats on the PA bear I had one skirt me at 60 yards out there a few years ago. Forsure a dream to get one

When I first tested them, they fell apart in gel! But that's when they were first released; they said it was a bad batch. I retested them a bit later and they did very well--much to my surprise. But then I've heard of people having bad experiences with them again. Pretty much anything can happen in a hunting situation, but I do fear there may be some quality control issues.

When I buy a new pack of broadheads the first thing I do is shoot one through a burning barrel. AKA 50 gallon steel drum, the head opened stay, together the next test 40 yards compared to field tip. Shot great out to 60. So then I shot it through a 4 gallon water jug opened on entrance exit hole was great. I believe the retention clip is too tight. A bear is a pretty squishy Target but I hit a rib going in dead center it should have opened on that. But it's plain to see by the lung that broadhead is closed. The arrow broke off I found the fletched side but I couldn't find the 10-in piece that was inside the bear, must have fell out somewhere I've looked but can't find it.

I've never been a huge fan of the "hybrid" style broadheads, especially when the mechanical blades are set that far behind the main fixed blade. Those little mechanical bleeders need something to catch on to open up, and the main blade is clearing too large of a path, which prevents them from opening properly. This isn't always as apparent on something like a steel drum, but seems to be an issue on fur/hide/soft tissue.

IMO that style broadhead only works reliably when the mechanical blades are set far enough forward to be one of the first things to contact the target on impact. The other issue is that the mechanical blades are sharpened so they will have a tendency to cut through tissue and not catch on anything to pop open.

Glad you recovered your animal, though! Great shot and a dandy bear.

Bear fur is problematic with mechanicals in fall hunts

I have to ask did you get the pleasure of dragging the bear to the truck? If you ever thought dragging a big buck thru the woods was difficult. Dragging a bear is like pushing a chain so much surface area and usually done in the dark.

I do have to admire PA bow hunters, Lester explained it to me. You guys do not get to hunt over bait that is crazy. Minnesota if you could not bait you would not see many bear at all. Wisconsin is crazy they allow dogs and it is as crazy as you can imagine. Dogs do not understand property lines.

Believe it or not at the shot the bear ran toward the truck he died about a hundred yards from it, and of course here in PA it's a pretty big thing when someone gets a bear let alone with a bow. So it attracted some attention from The neighbors an one of them had a coyote tractor with a bucket. I gut it and rolled it into the bucket and he dumped it in the back of my pickup LOL. I shot one in 2018 with the rifle and that one we used a sled and there was some snow that one was 220. And wasn't bad. And yes no bait no dogs. Makes it a challenge and so so rewarding.
