    Are flu shots worth considering?

They work on some strains of the flu's but it's not a cure all. My wife got sick from her flu shot ( it's mandatory at her work) I'll take my chances without.

I hate shots so I don't get one. I had the flu once in my life, I'll take my chances.

Yes they work. They are cultured to mimic projected strains of the virus, which constantly mutate. They work by fooling your natural defenses into believing a sterol strain is alive. Once immunized, an infection is rapidly attacked before it can replicate to any great degree.

If you are young and healthy, you can roll the dice, but the flu sucks!

First of all, getting the flu from a flu shot is impossible. It's a dead vaccine. If you get the nasal spray FluMist there is a slight chance.

Secondly, the flu vaccine is protective against the top 3 strains of the flu that the CDC predicts will be the most prevalent this year... There are dozens of strains out there so it's not a save all.... But it certainly helps. Especially since most insurances cover the shot for free.

Those that actually get the flu know that even a slight chance at avoiding it is worth it. The flu SUCKS.

That said, it's not as important for middle aged healthy adults. It's more important for children and elderly as they are the ones that are more likely to die from the flu.

I was under the impression there were more than dozens of strains.

Pretty sure it changes from year to year.

I used to get sick from the shot too. I stopped getting the shot about 4 years ago and havent had the flu since I stopped getting the shot. I'll roll the dice and keep not getting the shot.

In total there are, but in reality not all are seen every year. They trend up and down just as all sicknesses do. These trends are what the CDC uses to predict which ones to protect against for next years vaccine. Then they use chicken eggs to grow the vaccine (hence the question about an allergy to eggs when you get your shot). Newer vaccines are now using canine liver cells to grow the vaccine because it avoids the egg allergy problem and its much faster to ramp up production with than eggs in the case of a pandemic break out of the flu.

Most every rumor about why to avoid vaccines has been disproven. Vaccinate yourselves and kids folks, it truly does save lives.

People do sometimes get sick from the flu shot. It's not the flu, but it's still sick. ;)

I have never gotten one. None of the nurses or docs I worked would get them either. Not after the first couple of times. Some hospitals started requiring them, I quit working in a hospital.

Even if the particular strain of flu that you got the shot for comes around, your chances of getting sick are still over 40%. Just getting the shot doesn't guarantee that you'll build up an immunity.

The real flu is bad.... but I'll take my chances. If I get sick, I'll take elderberry extract (more effective than Tamiflu) and build up a natural immunity that should protect me from that strain for life.

I guess it works b/c all my coworkers get the shot, and I never get sick.

I got the flu once about 8-10 years ago. Hand sanitizer is your friend.

My wife had an allergic reaction to a flu shot and I had to rush her to the hospital. She could not breathe because her airway swelled shut. I have had no better luck on the years I have had the shot than on the years I have not. I pass.

My dad got guillain-barré syndrome after having a flu shot. That was something that was rarely heard of when he got it...now they say on the commercials for flu shots that if you have ever had this...you can not get one. It was very scary! I will take my chances as well.

I haven't ever gotten the flu on years I got a flu shot. I am prone to getting the flu when I don't get the shot. I prefer getting the shot, it never makes me feel sick.

I've been getting the flu shot for at least the last 10 years. Haven't once gotten the flu after the shot. It doesn't hurt more than a second and may just work so I think I'll keep getting them. I got the polio vaccine when I was a kid and never got polio. I got the Shingles vaccine and never had the shingles even though I had the chicken pox and measles when I was a kid. I can't believe it is that big a deal that anyone would not want even a little protection. BTW, I wear a harness when I am in the tree stand too even though I never fell out of a tree.
