I have 3 good size properties i can luckily hunt on. 1 of them a farm of 120 acres has very noticeable trails and bedding locations Another one we cant find any HIGHWAYS I call them that they are routinely using. Another one we found oneway off the beaten path thats just over the property we are allowed to be on. NO we don't hunt on that spot.. we stumbled on that after we realized we weren't where we were supposed to be But we do see tracks from here to there. But its just one set of tracks. NOTHING that is used .... I assume they travel the path of least resistance ?? No? Should i be looking elsewhere , maybe deeper into the property for these HIGHWAYS, bedding etc.? So im asking , are there things I should be looking for? I do see rubs once and awhile in the middle of nowhere. Any tips, thanks...
There was a pretty good article not that long ago about hunting edges. Try searching here at Bowhunting.com for it.
By hunting EDGES, Do you mean edges of fields? 2 of the properties are nothing but woods, No fields anywhere.
Not always, and sometimes things change. I have a spot I hunt and there was a monster path going into the woods. Tracks were everywhere in the field and led to this path. As soon as the field was cut, this path is pretty much done for and not used. Another spot I use on this property is down away from this field, the deer just funnel down to this spot to bed down. Once the temps get and stay in the 30's or so they leave and go to the deeper thicker pine trees that will be warmer than the more open oak trees. Then there is the regular gun season with people running dogs and all bets are off.
Check out the article. It is field edges and other edges where the terrain changes. Such as wetlands to forest or steep terrain to level terrain. That sort of thing. I'll try and find it and post the link here.
There's more to edges than just field edges. There are transitions within the woods that would be considered edges too.
If you really need help you could always find a aerial map on google earth and save the pic of the land you hunt. Then post that here and ask some of the vets how they'd hunt it. I think youll be pleasantly suprised with the feedback.
