I'm heading out to Wall, SD for the first time on a spot n stalk archery hunt. I'm looking for any advice, experiences or insight that might assist me on harvesting an anima onl my first spot n stalk hunt.
The best advice I have is don't be scared to try and don't be let down if you don't close the deal on an animal! I did a west river SD archery hunt last fall and had a blast! We weren't able to close the deal on any deer but were able to spot a couple big muleys. After the hunt we talked with a guide out there that we knew, he suggested to us that we should have stayed way back on the bucks until they bedded down. We had two guys and we tried to get around and down wind of them and ended up losing them. His advice to us was to have at least one of us stay with the animals till they bed down and always be watching them. (From a distance to insure not getting busted.) Once they bedded down and appeared to be staying there for awhile is the time to go after them. Enjoy the hunt and good luck!!
I did my first spot and stalk last year in late December. We were in Gregory county, which doesn't really compare to the Wall area. We were able to get to 50 yards on a couple does and a small buck, but didn't have a shooting lane. A different time we had two good bucks bedded in a pretty textbook area for a stalk, but a coyote came by and blew them out. It was still a lot of fun! Let us know how your trip goes!
