Hey guys! Here's my DIY project this year. I'm going to hunt a public piece in a new town for the first time fore deer. My goal is to shoot any deer with my bow with an emphasis on a buck. I am going to do some mock scrapes and scouting and hopefully I'll be able to be successful. I have never seen this property first hand so it is going to be interesting!

Good luck. I will be doing the same. Half of the sheds I found this year were on this property so I have something to look forward to. I have spent 10 days out there walking so far and plan to do a lot more before season.

Walk the property and look at aerial photos as much as you can before the season opens up!

I will, the only problem is that it is in a different town than I am going to living in this summer so trips out there are going to be few and far between. The property is located about 15 minutes outside of my college town

Even if it's only an hour at a time, it will be worth it. If you can, print off maps and take with you to mark trails, rubs, stand locations, etc.,. Keep your scent down to a minimum if possible too.

Where are you going to school?

My brother in law and I will be doing public land and the areas we put in for were at least an hour drive from the house. We've started some pre-season scouting using Acme Mapper and Google Maps.

Luckily when you go to school in ND I get ND resident licenses even though I am from MN, and bow tags I believe are OTC so I don't have to worry about getting drawn

That's the goal:) I just want to shoot a deer, be that a doe, little buck, or big buck. When i check out the places this spring and summer i will try to get a feel for how many deer are in the area and how much hunting pressure I will get. I'm worried that the spots that I am going to hunt are going to get hit hard by other bow hunters, so I don't know if I should try to limit out early in the season on the first good shot that I get, or should I wait and be picky for a good buck?

I'm guessing the only way to answer that question is based on what you find scouting this year. If you're only wanting to shoot a deer, you're probably best off shooting the first good shot you get. If you're looking for something in particular, that is when it gets tougher to decide. That all comes down to your personal wants and desires. Also, it depends on what time of year you want to shoot it. Hotter early season or cooler later in the year. School load, work load, etc.,.

That's all true. I'm thinking by best chance at shooting a buck now would be right away in the season before the bucks get pressured into being nocturnal.

15 minutes from Fargo? Shoot the first deer you see as long as you have time to take care of it. No bringing it home for your dad and brother to deal with!

Btw I hunt a lot of public land and I have discovered that some of the best spots are right of the road or trail and the worst are usually about 300 to 600 yds of the road, Its totally awsome when you shoot a deer only 60 yards from the truck and its all down hill:nana:

All I have ever hunted is public land. I would not know how to hunt anything else.

Pressured public land is mostly what I hunt here in Arkansas. The best advice I have is to get as far away from easy access areas as you can. Where I hunt a majority of the hunters will walk in pretty close to where they park and hunt, therefore a lot of the deer bigger bucks especially will go deeper into the woods. If a person is willing to walk a little bit great hunting can be found on public lands.
