Or come to Wisconsin and spend 160 with another 30,000 non residents where there isn't a ton of deer. Lol sent from my mini hand held phone
Iowa has 3.1 million residents... Ohio 11.6 million. Iowa is 56,000 square miles. Ohio 45,000 square miles. 4 times as many people in Ohio, but 3/4 the land size. A quick google search did not yield any license sales data.
I just don't understand how anyone who has NEVER hunted Iowa can keep spewing nonsense about why you shouldn't hunt Iowa.
Got your message Tom, thanks for the information! Really appreciate it! sent from my mini hand held phone
I don't know any data, nor anything else about hunting in Iowa. But I can tell you this...hunting is supposed to be fun, Hunting is supposed to make you excited about getting in a tree. If bow hunting Iowa and planning an awesome trip does that for you, go for it, stats be darned.
To be quite honest that is what it's doing for me. I'm pretty stoked about my road trip next month to scout some land.

1. Because not everyones rich to spend 550$ on a tag and if you get drawn and your friend and family member doesnt get drawn. Whats the point in going by yourself. some rather spend it on something else. 2. Some of us take our chance tagging a dandy buck somewhere else If you're not too trophy desperate. 3. we dont have access or owned land in Iowa. 4. if it's public land. We don't know how many hunters are there. What type of public land it is and what size bucks are there. 5. Even if some go, some of our home states prohibit us not to bring it back home except the meat and the clean rack. That means if we disposed the bones and spine on public land. The IowaDNR are not gonna be happy about it. So where to dispose those bones?? if we bring our trophys from Iowa back to our known taxidermist, and the brains still attached. You'll face violations. It's also a pain in the butt looking for the best taxidermy in Iowa and you could be driving an extra 100miles to one of the best taxidermys there.
If you want to not hunt Iowa and kill deer where ever you want, have at it. If I or anyone else wants to save up and hunt there every 2-4 years, I'll do that.
For starters, most people understand that you can apply as a group. So, your first argument is invalid. Either all in your party draw a tag, or you carry over the points. You don't have to own land in Iowa to tag a trophy. I met a guy on a DIY last year that just killed a 180" 10 point. His first trip here and hunting public ground. You don't know how many hunters are there, what the land is like, or the size of the bucks, because you have never done it apparently. But, really cool that you have solid advice to give about something you obviously know absolutely nothing about. It sounds like you better just keep putting down monsters at home and let those that want to experience something new, do their thing.
I'd love to try Iowa myself. But with the lack of knowledge of the area. I'd spend 4 days to hunt there. I'd be spending more time scouting than hunting. Like I said on the early post If it's just the experience go for it as well. But To me you get these up and downs. So are you gonna tag a one or go home with a 550$tag in your pocket?? That's what I care the most. Just because one guy killed his first 180class buck on Iowas diys, out of all the guys that come all over the state to hunt Iowa. That's not enough intel to convince myself unless a good friend that owns land there allow me to access there. I get that alot too when going Se Mn and Wisconsin. I've been through it. But if you're in for the expensive Iowa tags. Good luck
The plan for me is to scout for the next 3 years and learn the areas and some locals. Maybe get approval for some private land. But if I do a scouting trip for the next 3 years in spring my scouting should be taken care of. Hopefully it will increase the odds of being successful.
Lol! So, if you are going to spend $550, it better be easy with little to no scouting involved. I get it. You wouldn't be the first to be disappointed then. Enjoy.
