I've been looking at some pics lately of custom fletched arrows and it seems there is no set distance from the back of the fletching to the nock. Do you go 1/2"? 1"? Is there advantages to both? Purely for looks? I guess I've always been right around 1/2" on mine. Thoughts?

I use the blazer shrink fletch, they seem to set up about an inch from the nock.

I like to keep them far enough from the back that they aren't making severe contact with my face, but just enough so I can just make contact with it when settling to confirm my anchor if it makes any sense. Other than that, moving the fletching small amounts forward and backward isn't going to have a noticeable effect on flight.

IMO it is more about preference when it comes to something like this. Sure, theoretically where you put your fletching effects arrow flight, but I don't know anyone that would truly be able to tell the difference, myself included, if they 1/2" from back or 4". I shoot 80+ most of the time and I have tried different distances from the nock it doesn't seem to make a huge difference IMO; with my set up.
