Our president has ordered that all flags fly at half staff because of the death of the self proclaimed communist nelson mandela. Tomorrow is Pearl Harbor day,one of our nations most memorable and somber days in our history. More than 3000 American service members killed. I personally feel this is disrespectful for Pearl Harbor day to "share" the flying of our flag at half staff with a non-american communist. The facility I run will not lower the flag until tomorrow, and it will be solely for the remembrance of Pearl Harbor day. What are your thoughts?
Obama's an a$$hat and whatever he orders should be the opposite because he is so close to being a communist one could argue it and win.
Mandela isn't even the saint he's made out to be...and it saddens me people are so disillusioned about him: ?Saint? Mandela? Not So Fast! Just look up for yourself man is linked to a lot of crap and its factual.
I'm sorry, the American flag should NEVER be lowered in mourning a foreign national. Obama just proves once again that he is not for America.
President Bush Orders Flags Flown at Half Staff in Honor of Pope John Paul II Would anyone protest this? Pope was in charge when we had the greatest scandals in the the catholic church, which he covered up. I am pretty sure a young Mandela made some boneheaded moves in his younger days. He lived in a time when he pretty much was a second class resident in his country. His people had no voice, no vote and was not an equal. I cannot compare anything in my life to his, no one here can. So I won't Judge him, he did a lot of good later in his life. Respecting someone who tried to do some good. Invictus They above movie was pretty good, if you have not seen it, I suggest to watch it.
I always thought Mandela was a communist? Didn't he have ties to the USSR? I'm confused as to why we're honoring him?
Yes, he was a communist. Yes, he has been classified as a terrorist. But he also accomplished many great things. Many of the celebrated people in American history were horrible people, and some would be viewed as terrorist today.
That may be true...but Mandela WAS around today. We'll yesterday anyways... Wasn't communism the reason a hundred thousand US soldiers died in the 50s, 60s and 70s?
He did some good things in his later years, but Pearl Harbor day should have the flag ar half staff on its own. Not a secondary mention. The wording of the proclamation makes the feeling that flags are at half staff for Mandela, and by the way it is Pearl Harbor day as well.
Obama ordered flags at Whitehouse half staff. Boehner ordered the house to do the same. Where was it to be across the nation. But I agree with Iowa Veteran, I will pay tribute to Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th as I do every year. I have been to the Arizona Memorial. Never have I felt such an emotion.
72 years ago today, at 7:55 AM local time Hawaii, the Japanese Imperial Navy attacked Pearl Harbor without a declaration of war. Two hours and five minutes later, 2402 Americans were dead and another 1282 lay wounded. President Roosevelt said it was a day that would live forever in infamy. Remember those men and women today.
Chris Christie ordered the flags be flown at half staff for Houston, not Obama. I don't like Obama, but let's not be part of the problem with false accusations. Bush ordered them for Pope John Paul.
I can't think of anyone alive today worthy of lowering the American Flag for except our hero soldiers killed in action. They fight, they bleed, they die to keep it flying high in the name of defending our Constitution which Obama chooses to disregard every chance he gets.
Half of the people I see at sporting events don't even take off their hats when the National Anthem plays, so this latest thing with the flag being flow at half mast for a foreign national and communist is not shocking. It is becomming status quo here in the US.
Should the flags be lowered for this guy? I don't know but it's nothing I'm going to get worked up about. In 1954 , President Dwight Eisenhower issued a proclamation on the proper times for flying the flag at half staff. The proclamation included the ability for the president to honor foreign dignitaries. The entire world seems to be honoring the guy including republicans. House Speaker Sen. John Boehnr (R-OHIO): “Nelson Mandela was an unrelenting voice for democracy and his ‘long walk to freedom’ showed an enduring faith in God and respect for human dignity. His perseverance in fighting the apartheid system will continue to inspire future generations. He passes this world as a champion of peace and racial harmony.” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX): Mandela "will live in history as an inspiration for defenders of liberty around the globe." Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL): Mandela "showed South Africans and the entire world what the power of forgiveness truly means and can accomplish." House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) "world has lost an exceptional leader who made the world a better place."
