I'm with direct now. I'm all about quality picture and sound so that is the main concern.

My wife is wanting to switch because we can save $50 a month for a year and then $20 a month there after. And this is for a 4 room hopper set up.

I've had dish in the past and was not happy with the quality compared to direct but that was years ago. Mainly sound and local tv sucked.

Do they have true 5.1 or maybe 7.1 sound and are the local channel tru hd now?

If the quality is the same, it's a no brainer.

Does dish still cut out during storms and snow storms? I had dish back in the early days and it seemed about the only time I'd want to watch tv was during crummy weather... which is when I couldn't watch anything. :(

I have had Dish for 3 years, had Directv for over ten years prior to that. Yes, you can get Fox Sports Midwest. If I had it to do over, I would have stayed with Directv. Dish changes the programming packages non stop. One week I have a channel, the next week its gone. I will be switching back soon.

    No thanks:D

Direct isn't too bad but it will cut out if it gets really bad. However, the hd channels go out first and you have to switch over to digital channel.

Dish was great when I had it before about not losing service.

Ive had Directv for about 17 years now and I switched to Dish a few years back because it was cheaper. And then I found out why it was cheaper, it would cut out if it even thought about raining outside and it would get choppy really easily. I switched back to Directv in a week and never looked back. I would say 100% Directv all the way.

Have you called Directv to try and get your bill reduced? I did awhile able and was able to get around $30 in reduction. It ended up to where Sunday Ticket only cost me about $15 in the long run. They gave me $10 credit for going to auto bill pay, another $10 for going to e-statements and can't remember what the other reductions were.

And to answer Christines question, Directv loses its signal for me during rain and snow, a few years back before I moved we had problems with heavy snow and ice build up inside the dish that would knock the signal out until it melted or I went up and cleaned the dish with hit water. But we haven't had either of those things since I bought this place, no clue if the oval dish design is better or not.

Yeah, I have nine months left on my contract and plan on threatening to shut it off after it expires hoping to get the 5 tuner DVR and Sunday ticket for free like everyone else signing up.

The only reason I have Directv now is because comcast didn't honor my reduced rate I had been paying for 3 months of a 24 month contract. Said because I didn't answer my phone on a Saturday when they called I wasn't able to accept the terms and conditions. Told them I did that when I signed up paid my bill for 3 months at that rate. Took all the boxes back next day and had Directv within the week.

I don't think I could go with dish, I've never known anyone to be happy with them.

I was just getting ready to ask for an update, was going to be surprised if Directv didn't back down. I've heard rare cases where they have held firm, but more that once you call to actually disconnect is when they do what they say they couldn't do to begin with. It's that one time they won't I worry about, most times they're just trying to call your bluff as you are with them. It's who blinks first.

    Glad to hear they blinked!

Love my Dish, and mine almost never cuts out. Can't comment on the midwest stuff, but my inlaws have Direct and personally I like Dish better.

I guess I may be looking at alternatives. Time Warner just raised my monthly bill from $165 to $203. It has to do with a sign up special running out. Well hell, they have my phone, internet, sports packages etc and have for years... now they say I'm worth more. I might just unplug it all and see how they feel. I don't need to talk to you turkeys.

I've had Direct for years, and have never had any complaints. I only lose signal during very heavy storms, and generally it's just for a few minutes while the worst part of the cell passes. Not like I've had a choice though, we haven't had any other option where we live, besides Dish.

I'm going to have to give them up pretty soon though, the local electric coop is in the process of installing fiber optic to the home. I will be able to get an internet/tv/phone for a huge savings. Right now I pay about $120 a month on Direct, about $90 for Hughesnet internet(WORST INTERNET SERVICE EVER), and about $30 for local phone service. The fiber will kick those prices out the door. The most expensive service, which has basically every channel Direct offers, 100mbps dedicated internet service and unlimited local and long distance phonse service for $179. Gonna make the switch as soon as it becomes available.

Holy wow! 100MB service! what the heck do you plan on running out of your house. I am able to get DSL at my house and the fastest we can get is 1.5MBs so even 20MBs is like a rocket. I was looking at getting HughesNet but maybe not after you say they are bad.
