This freakin weather is killing me! Season opens today, but I wasn't going to be able to get out until Friday. But, after looking at the weather and wind direction......It doesn't look like I'm going this weekend at all. I'm just not going to push a bad wind. I have one spot that it is marginal, and if it were later in the season I would probably do it. But not the first hunt....And in another spot, with a good wind the deer will never know they're being hunted. So I'm just not going to push it......And this ESE wind is forecast from Friday - Monday. But, it's only Monday and they've been wrong before. I wanna go REALLY badly, but....w/out the right wind I'm staying out.
Well, the boss has been kind enough to let me off half a day today, and the wind is perfect for one of my very best spots in the river bottom, so I'm headed out this evening! It's cool out, the wind is perfect.....it should be a good evening. I'll report back in the morning.
IM just going to copy and paste what what went down this morning from HNI. Well, I saw 15 deer, and had a shooter at 22 yards at first light, he walked along an open trail broadside, I mean completely open shot, it doesnt get any better, 130" - 135" buck from looking with the binos as he was approaching. I could see the rack with my bare eyes. The guy filming said no go, not quite enough light lol, I was at full draw on him, 20 yards pin settled right in the crease, I just smiled at the camera after I let down, bummer. I have to get some footage for business stuff so Im committed to getting any kills on video. Was still a great morning, had deer all around us for 4 hours. Heading back out shortly, changing batteries, changing my Depends (lol), getting some lunch and back in. Man it was so bright walking in this morning, no flashlight required, I hate full moons except for morning walk ins.
SOB is right. Had a 100" 8pt around my stand for a few hours this evening with some Does, fawns and a basket rack 6 pt. Got to watch them tickle horn a few times. Was a really fun day all in all.
Looking forward to seeing some footage in the near future. I am predicting BBD by friday evening for me.
Diesel, sounds like a great morning in my book! I can't even imagine how much more complicated this becomes when you add a camera to the equation. I passed on a doe at 14 yards yesterday evening. I'm hunting the fringe of a thick bedding area between 2 corn fields, and it took me long enough, but I've learned you cannot kill a buck if you're busy busting does. So, I let her go. But all in all it was a wonderful evening just to be in the woods.
I had another great day. I saw a lot of deer, let 2 decent 8pts walk in the morning. My buddys wife wasnt as nice as I was :d This guy came by at 1PM, she was waiting for a bigger buck she had seen. He came back by at 3PM and decided she was going to take him.
Very nice buck and look at that smile. I will finally be getting my butt out around 02:30 pm this afternoon. My brother has been out twice and he has been seeing plenty of deer so I am pumped. T
Well I checked weather.com and intellicast.com and the worst wind I can get is happening this afternoon. It will be out of the north east and this is the first day I can finally get out. I have one spot that would of worked but the corn is still up right to the edge of it. Might be public time today.
Well about 05:35 my brother who was about a 100 yards away had a 140 class buck at 25 yards thrashing the heck out of some brush that was part of a 30 yard patch. He couldnt get a shot as that buck went nuts diving his head into it and just tearing it up. This was the 2nd time in 3 sits he witnesses a huge buck doing this. Both were different bucks for sure. Then about 06:30 I had a small basket 8 pointer at 20 yards I could of wacked but let pass I tried to get my cam out but couldnt quick enough. The deer sure are on the move around here with these cooler nights. I hope to get out again Friday afternoon. T
Jeff we can make you our team mascot!!! Here is a short vid we got of a decent buck last night Ive been trying to get a shot at. No trail camera pictures but Ive seen him coming out to the beans several times. I decided to give it a try yesterday after finally getting a favorable wind. We saw him come up from a bedding area about 60 yards from my stand I had set up above a bedding area I thought he was using, we were 30 or so yards inside the field edge. We thought he had moved well out into the field after we lost sight of him about 30 minutes prior to this so we figured it was safe to get down and sneak out the long way around. But, once we got out of the stand and walked up slowly to the field edge glassing to make sure it was clear, this dude popped out of a little island in the beans. Larry, the guy on the camera let out the explative after we think he heard us, he was definately on alert, winds was in our favor, but he definately didnt like something. Oh well, that may be it for him until the rut. I wont be back there for another week or so before I give it another try. Not real sure how big he is, maybe in the 140s?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2zMqmlohsQ
