When I was a kid In school dad had no problem at all with pulling me out of school to go on certain hunts. Back In the day for me bear hunting usually opened the same time school started. Dad had no problem In the least with me missing my 1st week of school when we drew bear tags. Usually It was every other year that we got drawed. The Principle on the other hand did to begin with and dad told him my son will learn more In a week In the woods then he'll ever learn In a week In school.

When my daughter Is old enough to hunt I won't have a problem at all In doing the same thing when It comes to hunting and missing a short period of school If she's fine with that.

Good on ya, Steve. I remember my Dad keeping me out of school for deer hunting. That was, hands down, the best time of year for me as a youngster. I'll never forget it.

The only time I was allowed to leave school to go hunting was the 3 day week of Thanksgiving.....and that was only 1 year.

I have no problem with anyone that does, as long as the kid is doing well in school. I hated school.....that's why they made me go!

My father never did, but I used to take my son out for some important days. A fishing trip one year, a pro baseball game another, once for hunting and his senior year several school visitations (even though we didn't visit a school, we went fishing).

I would not allow my children to miss that much school, that is just me. Now if they missed a Friday or Monday or something, that is something else. School is too important to me and my family for my children to miss a solid week.

I missed for hunting all the time... as long as my grades were good, my parents didn't mind at all.

He (buckmaster) turned out just fine.

    As for our son.....

I don't give the schools TOO much authority. He's MY kid, ya know? We take him out whenever we see fit.

My oldest son just missed the first week of school (Junior) becasue he was bike racing in Belgium. The school administration and teachers all agreed he would learn more there than he would the first week of school. No problems.

We have never hesitated to take our kids out of school for anything we felt was appropritate, including hunting, as long as they keep their grades up.

I missed for hunting all the time as long as my grades were fine and I wasn't going to miss basketball practice.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it as long as their grades are good like others have said. But when i was in high school a couple of us would plan our classes for first semester so we could hunt the morning and come back for 2nd hour and then leave before the last class of the day to finish in the woods. My parents never had a problem as long as homework got done and grades didn't fall. :tu:

Pretty much the ONLY reason I ever missed school was to go hunting & fishing. I almost never got sick. I had really good grades, my parents had no problems letting me miss to hunt & fish.

I had planned to pull my son out for a hunting trip with some Wounded Warriors this spring...but he was in an important part in his spring play thing. He didn't want to miss that, but the day he woke up and I was hunting he broke down crying to my wife that he wished he had gone hunting.

I plan a day or two hunting with him this spring, he will already miss a week when we go to Florida for a conference so this fall is pretty much out...but were going to Disney dammit.

i take my son out for week of deer hunting, except for last year..he wasn't putting an effort in his school work so i made him stay for school.
i would rather him be with me (12 yo) but he needs to earn it, it's not a given.

Well I'm homeschooled so I take off most of the mornings of Gun week but I can just start later in the day and hardly miss a beat. And sometimes I'll stop a little early in the afternoon to go hunting. I love it when my Dad takes a morning off and goes with me, he likes huntin almost as much as me.

I've been thinking a lot about this recently. I am leaning towards the "if the grades are good, then a day or two at a time is fine". I love to hunt and fish, but school will always be more important. If they don't slip by missing a day or two here and there, then I won't have a problem with it. I want them to understand how important an education is.

Before anyone overreacts, I'm not saying those that take their kids out of school all the time think an education isn't important.

Yep missed a week for PA deer season every year since 6th grade. One year a teacher said she'd give me an F every day I missed. Mom fought that battle saying I'd learn more in that week in camp than I would in school. I will do the same as my kids are ready!
