I've been mostly hunting out of my climber stand. I've been out 3 mornings and have seen a good amount deer and some good buck. I originally had my climber stand at a cross roads about 80 yards into the woods from a field. Like I said it was a good spot as far as seeing deer but they weren't getting close enough for a good shot the majority of the times I'd see deer. So after watching deer walk right on the edge of the woods all morning yesterday I finally made the decision to move my climber 40 yards from the fields edge. The downside to doing this is, I now don't have as nice of a tree to climb and I lose a bit of cover. The advantages to moving the stand is that on average 9 out of the 10 deer I've seen would have presented me a shot at the new location, I also have a better view range so will have more time to plan a shot. So do you think I made the right decision or should I have just stayed where I was knowing I had good cover and simply waited for the opportunity for the right deer to pass by.
Couple things........ They either knew you were in the area and we're staying at a safe distance..... or That is their normal pattern, in which case, it was a good move to try to get closer. Let us know what happens next. Good luck.
I hunt aggressively, so I make moves all season long. IMO no sense of knowing where the deer are passing through out of range and not moving your stand to hunt them. Good luck! On a side note you could always buy "steer a deer" and send em right past you.
I'd have moved my stand 2nd time I seen em' come through their IMO ya done smart thing. as for cover in tree get ya a bungee cord and on way to stand nip a few cedar limb's etc...brush whatever. bungee they together to stand climb up and bungee them on backside of tree behind ya to keep ya from getting skylined. I usually hunt around 20' if possible and after leave's gone i'll bungee some limb's/brush etc...behind me it work's well. good luck
Thanks, I really hope it pays off for me.. I took this morning off from hunting based on not getting much sleep due to my current job. Needed that day to sleep in and still was wide awake at 6 this morning lol. So I'll be trying the new spot this afternoon and probably tomorrow morning. I will def. keep you updated on how things pan out for me.
Yea i agree with suncrest. I only get ao many days in the stand. I look for sign and set up. If you are seeing the deer themselves and where they are traveling i would definitely capitalize on that.
I got my buck last year with a lot less cover, but there's no doubt I will have to be more careful with my movement in the new area compared to the previous spot. I still have cover behind me that will break me up, but with how the deer have been entering the area, it will be much easier for them to pick out my movement. I think as long as I keep my movement to a minimum and move slowly and quietly when needed I'll be alright.
