We made it down to 41 in Montgomery. I planted on Good Friday because there is always a cool snap at Easter. I don't think we are quite cold enough here to cause damage but we have one more night to go. How about you guys up north?
Heck, we had the warm streak in Late March, 70's and 80's and everybody got the bug and started planting.....but it was too early yet for Wisconsin....Weve had frost for about a week now, it's getting to the low 30's and even high 20's in many places now again....typical Wisconsin weather !!
We here in Western NY mirror my man's post above .... and since that is our new business, it is causing issues ....
I always end up replanting when I try planting early. To everything there is a season Ecc 3:To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven....A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted;
I laughed at anyone who even thought about planting anything up here in WI. We're still about 4 weeks out from being "safe" planting weather yet.
I just grow tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, watermelons and such but isn't the length of daylight also a big factor in determining planting times?
Absolutely .... especially with veggies. We are buying cuttings and liners and planting them in 6" pots ... have about 1,000 of them so far ... what a pain covering every night due to the frost ... we will have a. Hoop house for next spring so it won't matter ... but since we started, we have found we nned this and we need that .... but she loves this stuff ... so it's worth it .... now I hope y'all liked our FB page! :D
A walk in cold frame Tony? My family used to own green houses and I've built a few cold frames in my day. I did "Like" it. But just remember, never rub another man's rhubarb.
Lol ... yessir .... I guess it's as simple as driving rebar into the ground and bending PVC from bar to bar and then stretching white plastic over the PVC bows and wallah!
We used treated 2x10's around the bottom and fastened the PVC to it with U pipe straps. Then on the outside of the 2x10s we ran a channel and used some type of zig zag wire to hold the plastic in it when its stretched over the frame.
Not in the cold frames. They were just used in the spring before it was warm enough to keep annuals outside overnight and to make room in the full size green houses. The cold frames we just drug a hose in and watered, it was pretty easy. Even in the greenhouses we watered by hand. The only thing we didn't water by hand were the hanging baskets. We had overhead waterlines with drip lines running into them.
The misting bed is 2x12 pressure treated and the dimensions are 4x16 ... this is just for the cuttings as the become liners ... mist every 10 minutes during the.daytime ... the hoop house is for established plants .... it is crazy how much goes into this ... I have 8 yards of horse crap compost sitting in the back of my driveway ... I wish I had pics .... I did build her a potting bench...
I take that back. The channel attached to the PVC pipes about 12-14" above the 2x10s. Then at the bottom of the plastic the there was pvc pipe attached to the length of it so you could roll it up and let some air through when it got warm. Keeping it too humid in there would cause mold, mildew and root rot.
Good to know ... I was thinking the ends could open as well ... As far as the misting bed, the cuttings will be on sand filled totes ... moated until they develope a solid root system and then moved to the non misting side of the bed ... watered twice a day ... in the fall the whole deal is covered in white pkatic until the spring ... then potted and moved to the hoop house
