New to turkey hunting.. I've been Trying to learn how to use a diaphragm call. Yes I've watched countless videos and practiced a lot but the only way I can seem to even make a damn sound with the thing is if I put the call in backwards and suck in instead of doing it the "right way" and exhaling. I have 2 calls and neither of them even fit in my mouth the right way I feel like they're too big but idk. It's frustrating. Has anyone else had a problem like this (probably not) and what did you do to fix it. I'm probably just gonna end up getting a Slate call or just stick with deer hunting lol
Put it in your mouth and seed it against the roof of your mouth. Push your tongue up on the rubber part and now the air over your tongue. Takes practice that all. I remember when I first learned. Sounded like someone was stepping on a turkeys head. Hahaha.
I trimmed them for my son till they fit to start with and then bought him youth size may try that before u really give up. He had some local guys help him seemed better than a video. But I never got it down but the boy took off and calls them all the time. But trim a little at a time like an 1/16 to an 1/8 depending and press it up with ur tongue
I'm new as well but can make a decent yelp. But as other said press it to the roof of your mouth. Making a "chuh" sound works for me for a yelp. I had to mold mine a bit to fit in my mouth. For a cluck, I forcefully exhale air. Still working on other sounds. I practice in my car on my way to work.
I had a lot of trouble, I have a pretty strong gag reflex. I tried trimming them with no luck. I ended up the Primos mini-A frame model I think it is, and they fit my mouth and no gagging.
A few years ago I picked up the Primos 3 call pack with a cd which was excellent for teaching use of the mouth call. costs about 12 bucks and is definitely worth it. the primos mini fits me the best but if I can use a regular call if I trim about 1/16 of each side. highly recommend that Primos CD.
Pin it to the roof of your mouth as stated before. Just get to the point where you can make noise with it. After that, get to where you can make a steady sound with it.... High pitch wheeeeeeeeeeeeee. Then drop your tongue off it to make the yeowk sound. Don't be afraid to move your jaw either. practice, practice, practice.
You need to be able to work all the calls as at times toms will respond to one cal type but not another. Keep working. You will get it.
Totally agree, I've seen many of those types of scenarios. I'll just have to continue trimming and trying
Trim it to fit and keep at it. I like the chepo primos or HS calls better then the high priced ones I've ran.
I think one of the funnest things is the guy ( we all know him) that thinks he is awesome at calling, yet when you listen to him you are reminded of what it might sound like to shake a Tom, a cat, and squeak toy in a sack.... Always remember to practise
I don't actually inhale the call lol I just can't seem to make noise when I'm blowing or huffing air out but if I turn the call around and suck in a little then I get it to make a Yelp and a cluck... Yeah I know doesn't make sense and I sound stupid
No worries, just don't stop trying. And you don't sound stupid. In fact just by talking about it and seeking advice shows your serious
