Made my way to the restored Train Station Ford Motor company funded. Made me proud I drive a Ford the level of detail and commitment Ford had on this Project The Detroit Central Station was built by the Vanderbilt family and the same architect and engineers that built Grand Central Station in New York built this one. The splendor that was restored by Ford Motor Company was breathtaking! It cost a billion dollars to restore the building. This is the hall where people would board their trains. Before being purchased by Ford Motor Company, the building was in ruins. The original limestone had to be replaced, but the quarry in Indiana had been shut down. Ford purchased the limestone quarry and brought it back into operation just so the original limestone could be used to restore the building. The road to the quarry had to be rebuilt because it had grown over. 660,000 tons of limestone was brought to Detroit to restore the building. One of the original designs that had to be replaced. A stonemason carved a new one by hand, it was scanned, and all the other ones were cut by a CNC machine This was the waiting room for the first class women passengers. This was the great hall where all the other passengers waited. In the winter, portions of the marble floor were heated to keep the waiting passenger’s feet warm. This was the waiting room for first class men. It is now used for banquets. For over 30 years, the building stood vacant and was vandalized. They kept some of the graffiti for posterity. If you get a chance I would visits and take the tour, the tours are booked well in advanced. The skinny fit guy on the right is all because of Sota, change my life and I am enjoying it now!!!
