So I was going through my stuff to try to get ready for the upcoming season and cleared out my old tinks 69 and dominate buck from my pack. Before I replace, I got to ask is it worth it? I have had some 1.5 year olds come and smell it before but I not in the market for the young bucks. Does anybody have any convicting stories about using scents during the rut. Do mom and pop small brands work better, or urine from a single deer work better. At 10-20 dollars for a small bottle I might just go without.

When I've used Tinks, same thing with lots of young bucks. Stopped using it, mostly trying to leave no scent of any kind. I haven't used any of the mock scrape or licking branch scents, would like to hear if people have had positive results with them.

Another thing I learned over the years scent is not needed to shoot a buck.

I've had the same experience with Tinks as well. I have had much better luck with a company called Big D Ranch. I don't necessarily like to use urine, but absolutely love it if I notice that the wind keeps switching up on me while in stand. I honestly just take a wick out of my pack, put the urine on it and throw it out as far as I can. I did this mid-day last year on Nov. 12 and shot a nice 140 class buck. I knew where he was likely bedding and it wasn't but 30 minutes and he came in on a string. I couldn't even get him to stop in my best shooting line since he was nose down until he hit the wick. With the wind switching up I honestly think I would have been busted. I know quite a few people in my area that have had great luck with Big D Ranch as well. Hope this helps

Here is my experience with Tinks products. I used them for a long time. They were the only scent I really would take with me. I used the tinks 69 scent bombs, the spray can, and also used the mock scrape starter. One thing to realize is that nothing is a sure deal. It's not magic. It might help you on the right circumstances but things must align in order to work.

An example I can give you is my 2014 season. I moved into a new house and could hunt the land behind us which was around 60 acres of private land. Well by October I put in some mock scrapes with Tinks scrape starter. I checked them and in 4 days there were new scrapes right next to them! I was impressed. After a couple weeks went by I finally got the buck who made them on camera. He was a 100 inch buck and the largest I had on camera. A month goes by I had a week of vacation. I hadn't saw my target buck. He was flirting with me by showing up on the cam here and there. So I didn't know if I could get it done. Well the third and fourth day of my vacation we ended up getting 16+ inches of snow. I didn't hunt those days as I had to remove snow. The day of the break of storm I headed out around noon and decided today might be a good day to put out tink bombs. I put out 2 of them on the ground, and one in my tree. I thought it might work as the wind seemed right but who knows. In a half hour my target buck showed up out of nowhere and was looking for the doe. Within a minute, I was able to put an arrow through him! The tinks in my opinion worked!

This is one example and I'm sure there are 100's stories like it that are similar. The point of this story I can take is that there was actually a nice buck in my area at the time and that made a difference. That isn't always the case. Prior to my 2014 hunt I used Tinks exclusively on public land with zero success. It seemed like it never worked, but the moment I was on property where there were more deer it worked. In order for any scent to work for you, the right factors need to align.

These days I no longer use tinks. Mostly because I went away from synthetics. I like using deer urine that comes from one deer. Now I can't attest that the natural works better than the synthetic, but it's just my preference. This year I've really gotten into mock/over marking scrapes. The reason I like to do this is because I find it interesting and love getting bucks on camera in front of the scrapes! Also note that what kind of woods you hunt makes all the world for mock scrapes no matter what scents you use! Let me know if you have any questions as I'm glad to help!

Lastly I always like to share this thread as it's probably the best I've seen regarding mock/overmarking scrapes.

I have friends hunt with me on my property that want to use urine/scents & at most, deer will stop a moment to sniff. After my friends leave, I hunt without any scent/urine & see just as many deer as we did with their $20 bottle of "something's different in my woods". I prefer scent silence also.

like hatfield stated, every store has 100's of different scents to choose from now days and every hunter seems to buy them up and you'll see wicks hanging around the woods. I bet they were more effective 15+ years ago, not so much anymore my 2 cents

I have used a few different scents from Tinks, Code Blue, & some urine from a farm and every single time the majority of deer on my farm spook from it. I usually don't use urine anymore.
