Am I the only person who stops watching a show the moment they show the hunter "reactivating" the corn pile? Stand is 20 yards away and they just watch the corn pile. One thing I do enjoy about bhod is folks learning their land and actually hunting their land. Finding pinch points, bedding, food sources ext. Bow season starts in 22 hours. Rant of the day. Tick tock tick tock.
Ya, I consider that to be more like target practice than actually hunting. A big part of what I love is having to learn about the deer in each new area of land... what they eat, where they bed, where they find water, where they travel when it's dry, wet, etc. "Hunting" over bait seems like "fishing" at a trout pond.
Also how their travel patterns change with the crop rotation. Had one area last year that was used a bunch, traveling from bedding to corn field. Beans there this year and have not had one deer on that camera this year. May change later but ? ?
I rarely watch any hunting shows outside of BHOD. Mainly because I don't watch much TV and BHOD is available on Roku, YouTube, BH.com etc. When I would see professional hunters sitting behind automatic feeders, it was a bit of a turn off. The thought for me is this. Here is a pro hunter. Who is probably on a decent ranch/outfitter with a lot of awesome deer, great dependable gear, and they are simply baiting. I personally do bait in some areas I hunt so I'm not knocking it. However when it comes to a professional show I prefer to see more of a natural hunt where the deer are in a natural setting than a cookie cutter ranch automatic feeder hunt. Just my opinion.
I tuned into a show one time and shut it off the moment I saw the hunter dump a pile of minerals 20 yards from his stand and then climb up a tree. Now we all know that bait doesn't make it a sure thing, but to me it's enough of an advantage that I don't find it entertaining. That is what hunting shows should be is entertaining. You want to go hunt over bait? Go for it! That is your right. But don't expect me to watch it because I don't find it entertaining.
I quit watching any and all produced hunting shows after this---Very well to do dad from New York taking his 10 year old son on first hunt---pics show kid sleeping in truck on way to Private ranch--next shows kid being awakened , still dark--kid gets dressed in his brand new L L Bean hunting clothes, eats breakfast, then gets into outfitters truck, still dark--next kid climbs stairs into plush tree house, next shows getting light, kid bored already. next you see a 14 point buck walking over to cornpile- kid shoots buck with rifle ! Outfitter helps kid out of treehouse, takes kid to buck dad is then shown acting so proud, I gagged, what did the kid learn ? he probably doesn't even know what a deer turd looks like--how long do you think he will be a " hunter " Video games are much more exciting This is when I quit watching hunting shows period !
I turn any show off that does that. I also turn off any show that headlines "we will be heading to MEGA BOONER BUCK RANCH."
I havent watched any hunting show since college and that was Nugent's spirit of the wild, cant stand any of it anymore. although I did start to watch MeatEater on netflix since I enjoy Rinella's podcast; I suspect I would like Newberg's show too, but watching TV in general is hard to do with no time
Once beans are harvested I find the deer do not hit the field hard till after a frost. They like tender leaves but not tough and they seen not to eat much beans at a time like they will corn.
You forgot to add the part where the kid was playing on his Ipad before (and probably after) shooting the buck... I wholeheartedly agree that this is not what hunting is all about, at least for me.
Don't get any hunting shows that I have found in this area. Maybe just because DISH don't carry them but that's all right by me. Don't watch U-Tube either. Eats up bandwidth like crazy. Watch some TV in the evenings after supper (dinner to society) or a race or two on weekends. Sounds like hunting show are about like pro fishing shows where the divers put the fish on the hook.
The only thing worse than showing them hunting an obvious bait pile are the shows where you can't see any bait, but for some reason the deer keep going to the far side of a log and putting their head down to eat something....the Stealth Bait Pile!
Sooooo..... As someone who is part of a television show, I have my opinion on this as well. I'm not interested in watching a show that starts out like "we are heading to so and so outfitter". The idea of watching outfitted hunts does not appeal to me. I also don't care for watching hunting over bait of any kind. I think that is because I'm from a state that doesn't allow baiting and it's not part of my culture. Several of the team member on our show are from states where baiting is legal and they see things differently than I do. I think a lot of it depends on your local rules and the way you were brought up hunting. It's also funny how different species are though of differently. I don't think I've ever watched a bear hunt where they weren't hunting over a 55 gallon drum packed with all sorts of bait under it. That seems to be the norm for bear hunting and nobody seems to have a problem with that. It's one of the reasons bear hunting isn't really on my bucket list.
I will say this, as someone that doesn't hunt anywhere near any type of agriculture that isn't sugarcane or pine trees, just because someone has corn down doesn't it is a go sit and shoot a deer operation. I rarely ever hunt over corn but use it a lot as an attractant in front of a camera. We don't have the ability to hunt an oak line between a bean and corn field. It is very different in places outside of the midwest. The reason I rarely ever hunt over bait is because the deer where we hunt are conditioned to go to the feed at night. Sure you could pop a doe or something but big bucks don't go to feeders by us when it's daylight outside. All this being said, what I'm getting at is everyone hunts in different situations, don't be so hasty on someone because they are doing it a little different but within the rules
