I seem to say this every year, I'm worried about our #'s. This even though we are considered in a high density area. Our area is in the possible Sept. hunt zone for early doe gun. I've seen just 3 buck and three live fawn. Last night I took a dusk walk to big plots and the back line to view the farmers hay and bean fields. Nothing on mine but just six deer in the fields. Of those six was one fawn and 5 doe. So four doe with no fawns in tow just at dark. I came home and in the clover field next door were 3 deer. Two big doe,no fawn and way up in the corner, one of the 3 buck I've seen. The DEC units are fairly large with really diverse landscapes. That said seeing this few deer in an ag. area that 15 years ago saw herds of 20-30 in the field next door is worrisome. Looks like I'm going to be considering heading to camp again this year.where they aren't trying to kill every doe around . Now all this said, sorry meat is meat and filling the freezer will take priority.Though I did get a doe permit for camp.
I think you'll be ok. I've seen a few acorns on the ground, maybe the deer are in the woods more right now.
Let's hope, though an excuse to hit camp is always a good thing. This said even when I do all the work I do here. Nothing, absolutely nothing is done at camp so a totally different type of hunt, more like public. Way fewer doe permits allowed. Tons more cover even though it's buckthorn which is nasty. The deer actually eat them. There are also way more wild apple that stay on the trees well into Nov.
P.S. I did find that the turkey are all roosting on us. Unfortunately t eyes were skidding and I managed to push them off roost 2x' s before getting home. So I may not have as many deer, I do have way more turkey. 10 poults seen so far from just 3 hens. We have way more hens than that around.
I planted buckwheat in the spring to build soil. It should be about done in a week or two. Then, I’ll lightly disc and broadcast oats again for fall. Last year, I planted the oats with the next three days forecasting 80% chance of thunderstorms. Ended up with two months of no rain. The turkeys LOOVE buckwheat. This is the first year I’ve planted it here. This spring we had tons of rain and I’m pretty sure it washed out a lot of seed.
I intended to post this in the 2021 land improvements thread. I dunno what happened. Haven’t even got into the beer yet.
Read all the same...I love buckwheat...I have some residual coming up in a lower plot that had buckwheat 2 yrs ago. It was one of the first of " that won't grow, deer don't eat that " plantings I started with many ,many years ago. It still makes me smile.
