I always process my own deer. A butcher wont take care of the meat like the person that shot it since its not theirs. I would say like 95% of butchers will take some meat from people which that alone is enough for me not to drop it off. It always pays to butcher the deer your self. The amount of knowledge that you learn is enough for me to butcher them myself. I don't want to leave out that when i can do something my self and i'm at least half way decent at it, i get a little cheap and do everything myself.

I think it's really funny that people think the local butcher who cuts deer up for some extra money is sitting around waiting to steal meat from unsuspecting hunters.
Have you every seen the crap that gets brought in to these guys? deer shot god knows how many times, dragged though the woods by their necks, blood shot though the flanks, asses and bladders left in them, pelvic bones split and the inside rounds laying exposed to air, dirt and god knows what else ...yep a sounds like just what joe butcher was waiting to steal a few pounds of.

Did u ask for the bag of trimmings? I know when we get our deer processed if you dont ask for trimmings u lose about 10 pounds of meat. They arent stealing that 10 pounds they just scrap it if u dont get any ground or sausage. We always get the trimmings then ground our own meat for whatever we need.

Its not the butcher stealing meat that worries me, its getting meat from deer like you described when I take good care in handling my kills. I know several local butchers very well and while the steaks and roasts you get back from them are yours, the grinds are a little bit of everyone's. I've seen some nasty looking deer dropped off to my taxi (who also is a processor) and I don't want to feed my kids anything that has been handled that poorly.

And also I like to cut up my own because I get better and better at it every year, and enjoy being able to pass on a very useful skill to my two sons.

Not every deer butcher takes meat from their customers and on top of that not all butchers who take meat will take them from all of the deer or most of the deer that he is cutting up. It doesn't always happen but it happens enough for me to have that as a serious consideration.

PM me if you want to bring your deer here or have me come out and we will have a great time :tu:

I've been a professional butcher for 40+ years and have processed hundreds of deer.
    1) the notion of getting a little of every deer there is ridiculous.
    2) if he's a decent guy he should give a least 1/2 the cost back to you, if not all.
    3) if you get no satisfaction you have no real recourse just don't go back.
    4) learn to butcher your own deer. It's not rocket science and and average doe should only take about an hour to do.

Call him back one more time, be nice.
    Good luck. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1354091069.710945.jpg

I am confused; Why do you believe you should get $80.00 dollars back? You got a deer processed into 28 pounds of meat. Which most people on here agree is about right for a doe. If he says he gave you back your deer... give him the benefit of the doubt or just don't use him again. But be aware, if you take another deer to another processor, you're going to get about the same amount from most does and in the process you will have lost a potential friend. It's not worth it.

Maybe take PT up on his offer...I can't imagine a better deal than that.

Bowbender, i recognize that picture. I bought that DVD from the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries on how to field dress and process a deer earlier this year. it is outstanding, and i highly recommend it (although i have yet to butcher my own deer, the dvd provides a great in-depth tutorial that made me feel like i could tackle the job). https://www3.dgif.virginia.gov/estore/proddetail.asp?prod=VW250

I agree, you may have gotten shorted a little...but not alot if you did. The last deer I had butchered (about 20yrs ago) I got right at 40lbs of meat back, and he was 120lbs dressed. I'd just suck it up and learn to do your own. We butcher about 20 every year...it ain't hard.

I have 2 on my porch right now on ice...gonna work them up tonight! :D

Thank you for the kind words. I made no profit on making the DVD for the Game Dept. I knew there was a need for it. If anyone has any questions on processing they can PM me and I'll be glad to try and help.

if most people here agree about 28lbs of meat for a doe, i really feel sorry for them. A 1 1/2 yr.old doe will produce 30-32lbs of de boned meat here in Nrew York southern tier. I have been hunting 30+ years and it is not rocket science determining the amount of meat. If you viewed the pic, the center deer was an 8 pt.buck yielding 47lbs of meat. The doe on the right was a bit larger. Because it is a female, it doesnt mean you will get less meat!

2 1/2 to 3 1/2 deer yielding 25-30lbs of meat.. Must be very small deer where you hunt!

This post was not about how much meat a deer will yield, but a mistake made by the butcher. The tenderloins were like fish sticks and I have pics that will show the tenderloins still on the deer. They should have been 3 times as big. There is no mistake about it. The butcher gave me the wrong deer back. I wanted to know how everyone would react. My reaction is not good. Out of good will, the butcher can not fix what happened, but why should I pay for his mistake? He should refund the fee? I just wanted to know what my fellow hunters would do? After all the work and effort, you get screwed at the end, it just aint right!!

We don't know that you got screwed. We only have your side of the story. We don't know that the butcher did anything wrong so we don't know that he should refund anything.

We do know how much our average deer weigh and they may be smaller than your deer or they may not be. I have processed and weighed enough deer to know what to expect. How many deer have you processed and weighed yourself?

I do respect the opinions of the forum, but you will have to take my word, as well as there are 2 pics posted. There are witnesses besides me who saw the deer. I have personally killed approx. 60-70 deer in my hunting career. After that many kills, you get an idea of how much meat you will get back. We are meat eaters, not rack hunters. In fact this was the third deer i brought to this butcher this year. I know he did not take the meat. I know i got back the wrong deer! Who knows how the guy field dressed the animal i got back, that is another story! So if you want to attack my credibility, thats your opinion!

How do you know for sure it's not the same deer? It's not like they have a UPC on them.....I feel your frustration, but go have a nice easy chat with the processor, rather than blow up and throw accusations, will work out in your favor more than likely.

I don't believe I attacked your credibility but I also don't just accept the word of some made up internet name either. You want credibility? Earn it.
