Can anyone explain the process of creating a blanket from deer pelt? How long should you let it cure? Conditioning the hide? Explain the process. I would like to make one this the season
Get a tanning kit, and you can do it yourself, or you can have a taxi do it for about $50-80 depending on where you are. I have a couple I've done myself, but for the money, I'll just as soon let someone else tan them for me. Here's one with my old Hoyt Striker laying on it, posed for classifieds several months ago..... . And he's one from a late season yearling I killed about 6-7 yrs. ago, with my 38Ultra laying on it.....
visit vandykes taxidermy supply, buy a quart of Krowtan and some salt, rough flesh hide, cure in Krowtan per instructions, then do a finish flesh.
I've used brains, noxema, Lutan F, and liqua tan. Have some bottles of Krowtann hanging around but haven't gotten to really try it yet. Flesh the hide good. Depending on the what you're using to tan it, you may need to salt it and/or 'pickle' it. (neutralize if pickling) Apply tanning chemical. (washing maybe) Breaking, oiling, breaking, oiling, breaking, breaking, breaking, breaking and then more oiling. The more old style you go, like using brains, means the more elbow grease you need to apply. BTW, they don't make good 'blankets'. Cervid hair tends to break and shed pretty easily.
