Guys, I'm getting my buck mounted and was wondering how long, on average, it takes to get a shoulder mount back? I know it depends on the particular taxidermist and how long he takes, and how busy he is, but I was just wondering what the average time would be. I shot him 10/12 and he went to the taxidermist 10/13. (I didn't waste any time) :D
That is only a question you can ask the Taxi. Mine told me upfront atleast 18 months. My last one was 14. Some of the locals can get them done in as little as 3 or 4...but I would put the mounts from my taxi up against any of them for quality. And then do it again in about 10 years.
My taxi owes me a favor..he says I'll see mine in a month. Should this be a concern? Is there such a thing as too quick? (if done right)
I have mine back within 60 days and the fastest was 3 weeks. My taxi also farms and as soon as his crops are out he is full-time and can run several heads at once. Also, if you pay up front, he will do your mount with the next batch through. He is a little high on his prices but I dont have the patience to wait a year or more. Worth the extra cost to me.
With my deer, the taxidermist told me 12 months, which would be coming up in the next few weeks and they still haven't asked for my horns back. My buddy gets his back in two months and my neighbor took 2 and a half years to get his back, so it all depends on the taxidermist and how busy they are.
Average would be 6 - 8 months. And obviously could be longer depending on the taxi if it's a true monster they can have it done immediately for the shows all you need to wait for is the cape back from the tannery.
A month is doable. If he tans his own capes. You can put one together in no time its just the drying that takes the time.
My taxidermist guarantees it back in three months if you bring it to him by DEC. 1st. last year mine was about month and a half.
It all depends on the cape tanning which has been said already. Some guys use other capes from a deer farm which they can match the age and neck size of your deer, or tan their own which is faster. If they send them out it can take a long time. I'm always sceptical of a "high quality job" if its done in a month. Quality takes time.
I took mine in November 6, and the taxi said I could have it by January sometime. But we had to use another cape, and he said it was already tanned, so that cut the time down.
The one doing mine and the one who did my dad's (same guy) is low volume (about 15 mounts total a year), and tans his own hides. I dropped off on the 24th of October, and he said to expect it back by March or April. Some of the other taxi's in the area do 100-150 a year. Add in the time to send hides out to be tanned, and most people have a wait time of about 10-14 months.
Im guessing for most, 8-12 months is the norm. Mine usually has mine done in 3 months. He dosent advertise, lives WAY out in the country, and dosent take more than a certain # unless you know him very well depends on the Taxi
