A small red fox runs out and gives you multiple shot opportunities....do you shoot it... Ill start by saying I havent seen a lot of fox in my hunting career so its hard for me to judge size and I know they are smaller animals anyway but it seemed real small to me....whats funny is if it was a coyote...big or small....dead.....ive always wanted a fox but couldnt pull the trigger because I was thinking that the 308 was crazy over kill....just seemed crazy at the time....ethics dilemma maybe...I dont know....it was like 40 yards away....what would you have done??....I will say I kinda wish I wouldve shot now.....I dont think they really do anything that would negatively effect deer hunting besides maybe spooking them a bit right?? Fox are great to have around, much different then coyotes. Coyotes will actually scare deer, turkeys and everything else out of an area while the only thing afraid of a fox are small rodents. If you have a shed, cabin, or store things outside fox are much like cats at keeping the mice population down. Anyhow they are often very fun to watch as they sneak through the field or woods looking for their next meal.
I would not shoot a fox with a 308 way to much power you wouldnt have anything but a set of legs left over.
I let foxes pass, they don't seem to be a nuisance like a yote is. If I had a plan before I saw one then I may take one. To each his own though. I would think a .308 would make it a useless kill. I did watch fox get himself a squirrel a few weeks ago, very cool. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wait until deer season is over and go back in with a varmint rifle assuming the fox is still legal to take then. You know the fox is around so it extends the season. I do the same with coyotes around here. I'll take one when deer hunting if the opportunity arises but after deer season I'll hunt them with an AR and predator call. This also makes for a good time to scout new deer spots for the next year. Any buck you find after the deer season is likely to be in the same area next year if he survives the Winter weather and any local predators.
My suspicions and thinking were correct then....glad I let him walk....awesome to watch him stalk along the fields Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
