My closest was at 8yds, my farthest was at 42yds wide open no wind completely broadside and oblivious to me being there. Made that shot perfect then botched a 30yd shot a month later. Preferably anything under 20-25 in timber, 30-40 in a field with calm winds.
All 3 I got last year were under 30 yds, longest was 26yds. I would only shoot out to 40yds feeling comfortable at an ethical shot. Good question Archerygirl
The majority of my shots are within 10 yards. Longest kill shot was 42'ish several years ago. Last year had a 30yd kill and was the longest in about 5 years, most of my stands don't allow much past 15. Makes it very difficult to get in position and draw. Really need to figure a new set up out in my favorite area.
I hunt in the West in some wide open country. I have never shot a deer closer than 40 yards. I would say my average is around 55 yards. When doing a spot and stalk on a mule deer, by the time I get to about 50 yards I feel like I am standing right on top of it. My goal this year is to take a shot within 30 yards. I practice regularly out to 110 yards. However, I am only confident shooting at an animal out to 70 yards.
I'm good out to 40 yards.. but 40 on the practice range and 40 on a living deer in the woods are very different. Average.. 20-25 yards for me. I have shot deer a little over 40 and last year I took a triple (allowed in Maryland)and the last deer was mabye 2' from my tree. I had to wait until she walked out a few yards before I could get a clear sight picture. She made it to about 5 yards and I took her down.
My shots usually range from 10-30 yards. I practice out to 40 but don't care to push it past 30 to often.
The majority of deer I have shot have been within 25yds. I've shot a few past 40, but I prefer up close and personal!! SCFox
I practice at least twice as far as I'm willing to take a shot. Where I hunt the food plot I'm over its a 20 yard shot, elk hunting max 40 to 50
