I would guess that my average is somewhere around 14-15 yards but I have shot them from 5 (from the ground) to 35 .
archery girl, if you pick a max range you are comfortable with and shooting groups at and then structure your hunt around that distance or less, you'll have an enjoyable hunt and have the confidence to make your shot. A hunt based on a max range of 15 or 20 yards beats sitting at home waiting to be able to shoot 30. my deer was shot at less than 10 yards. enjoy your hunt.
Well my one and only bow kill was at 17 yards. My shotgun kills from the previous couple years were at 4, 8, and 14 yards. Last year I had a forkhorn that was at most 2.5 yards from my ground blind. I could hear him breathing he was that close. I had my then-girlfriend with me, and didn't want to shoot it as it was her first time hunting. She said she was afraid to breathe because he might hear her.
I assume that you are a new archer trying to figure stuff out. When I bought my first bow it was from a big box store. If not for my local bow shop I would have been frustrated and probably gave up. If you have a local bow shop that has a range see if they will give you a lesson. Experienced eyes can watch you shoot and give you some suggestions on your form. Your form does not have to be perfect consistant is what you are after. If you anchor the same way every time accuracy is not far away, try a kisser and a lesson and you will be shooting well in no time.
Usually its between 10-30 yards, but I have taken a deer at 42. All depends on the circumstance. Def would never let an arrow fly on an alert deer at 40 plus! Also at 30 plus yards I always hold on the heart or a tad low, in case they drop. Practice longer range like said earlier and it makes those short shots feel like chip shots! Good luck and practice practice practice!!!
Mine have all been between 2 and 27 yards. Average is between 6 and 8 yrds. I like em really close! It adds to the thrill :D
I wont shoot past 20 yards. I practice up to 30. But, last year I passed up a few doe that were at 25 yards because I wasn't comfortable doing it. I only pull 40 pounds, so I want to be sure that I can get a clean good clear shot.
My 3 deer with a bow have been 20 yards, 30 yards, and 20 yards for an average of about 23 yards. The one from 30 yards was from a ladder stand and the other 2 were from the ground. I consider 30 yards my max. I used to have 5 pins on my sight but now I have only 2. I had a 10 yard, 20 yard, 30 yard, 40 yard, and 50 yard pin. Decided I didn't need all that clutter when I looked through my peep site and now just have a 20 and 30 yard pin.
Have taken many straight down shots but don't really like them. I learned the hard way I can only get one lung from above. They can go a long way on the other lung. Most have been 5 to 15 yards. Never over 30 yards in over 40 years of bow hunting and well over 150 bow kills. My theory, a bow hunter tries to see how close he can get, an archer tries to see how far he can shoot.
95% are between 5 - 25, and the other shots are 30 - 45. I don't think I will ever shoot passed 40-45. Unless I'm out west where you almost have too. Sent from my IPhone 5S.
