Why is the DNR buying the farms for hundreds of thousands of dollars instead of fining the farms hundreds of thousands instead??? I get it, if the state owns the land they can contain the contaminated area and slow the spread of CWD in that area but come on.

It does make sense to financially motivate people to work to stop the spread of this disease. Where I live, the state is about to pass legislature to overturn the ban on baiting for the entire northern half of GA. This with CWD on record in Mississippi and other states close to us as well. Not the first time that legislators are getting something wrong...

I admire the DNR for buying the farms out rather than stiff arming the owners. State DNR's waste money left and right, it's good to see them doing some good with some of it for a change.

Why should the owners of these deer farms not suffer consequences for their part in spreading this awful disease? They are clearly not spreading the disease intentionally but I sure wish they would do away with this industry. I'm not going to pretend that I have researched this in any way but the things I have read have lead me to believe that many of the CWD outbreaks have been linked to these deer farms.

***Covey, not saying you said they should not suffer consequences just keeping the conversation going.

Wow a Durkin article about CWD that doesn't bash Walker now I've seen everything. Covey I'm right with you the DNR needs to contain the area and the best way is to own it. The bad part is they are going to own a whole bunch of uninhabitable land if this keeps up

It's a natural disaster more than a disease. I don't see it as a blame game. I feel for these people that have invested their lives into an industry they love and care about. It's popular here to bash deer farms, while I'm not pro-deer farm...I'm also not a militant anti-deer farm hater. I feel for these people as producers who are engulfed in an industry and natural resource killing natural disaster. Deer farming may be helping spread it by the nature of the business but they didn't create the disease, they're plagued by it.

We're all looking for a point of attack to battle this mess to keep from losing a natural beloved resource. These people have their lives invested in their business, we want the disease quarantined....buying the farms seems like a good compromise unless you're just all for government shutting down these peoples business and forcing them into bankruptcy due to a natural disaster or the government taking their private property. These people are being hit with unimaginable losses each and every day as it is, what they sold out for isn't likely even a fraction of the actual value of what they once had. How much do you want these people to be punished?

If you want the industry done away with then buying out the farms is the most reasonable and the quickest way to go about it...that's the American way in my mind that's the most fair to everyone. These operations have to have permits (I assume) to keep going so stop issuing new permits for new start up operations while allowing existing operations to sell out and transition out of the business. I prefer in this country for change to be encouraged but voluntary rather than abruptly punitive and forceful, call me old fashioned. I'd prefer it be done by a lack of market value, consumer driven.

I agree it needs to stop, so do feed lots for all livestock.

Why is it uninhabitable? Can't raise deer on it...I've seen no scientific data to suggest it's not still usable for anything else. No land is unusable, if nothing else how about a landfill? Wastewater treatment? Probably a million uses.
