Had a small doe work her way directly under my stand. She started crunching on something large when I got a closer look, it was a deer scapula and another small bone. Both bones looked older with no meat at all. Has anybody seen or heard of this before? This doe was alone and very small, think I saw spots.
Bwahaha, I had the same thought just as I read this, lol. The other day I heard someone say that deer would eat shed antlers for the calcium and phosphate...my guess is that is the case here also. I will say I had my doubts about deer eating antlers though...guess maybe it's true. I think I would be putting out some serious mineral licks around the area.
why not? Squirrels, mice, etc eat antlers. Deer are also known to eat meat and fish: Meat-Eating Deer | Outdoor Life Seeing is believing with meat-eating deer Both stories make the same basic point - deer aren't herbivores, but are omnivorous scavengers.
I'd guess it was looking for minerals and such it's not getting in it's everyday diet. Might not be a bad idea to toss a mineral lick out there!
I have heard of deer that live near water or on a island will eat the small dead fish that wash up on shore.
