I wish we got the traffic by our Cabin like we used to. Deer drives were golden for me They would show up in their caravan, get out of their vehicles smoking, talking as loud as can be. Spend 15 min getting ready. Then within 90 seconds of stepping into the brush, deer would sneak by my stand Sure it may be annoying, but I welcomed those goofuses pushing the thick stuff for me. It's funny when they finish their drive and try to figure out which one shot at something I'll also say, most hunters, especially drivers, just plain don't look up. Every year I get someone or a group of guys that will walk within 30 yards of me. Half don't see me until I say something. Most then respectfully move off, sometimes even apologizing. Others are so ashamed that they didn't see me, they slink off without a word.
I'm in the minority here, but I enjoy deer drives. I will say I was happy when Illinois outlawed them on public ground. At least in my area, most of the guys on public ground don't have anywhere else to hunt, and most of the guys doing the driving did. Deer drives don't always consist of 20 guys blowing whistles, air horns, screaming and bullets flying. My son has killed 7 deer since 2006, all on drives with him blocking and me quietly walking. He's safe, patient, and a darn good shot. I started out by showing him maps of the places we would walk, where the deer normally came out, and where he needed to set up. Most importantly, I showed him where he could safely shoot and more importantly, not shoot. Most of the time, he gets deer walking by at 25 yards or less. We have the routine down very well, and I trust him to block at age 17 more than most 40 year olds.
Doesn't public hunting ground mean just that. The public is free to purse game there as long as they are hunting legally.. I gotta say I would be hacked off to if something like that happened to me, but then again they have the same right to enjoy public ground as you do.. Take advantage of the opportunity and wait for the bucks that will always slip back through the drivers and walk right into your hands!
