I do. I'll get some pics uploaded of it and of a 110" 12 pt. Both mature deer, based on tooth wear, and both unique trophies to me, even though iv harvested much bigger Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I don't like the whole concept of a cull buck. Genes come from two different animals and many experts argue the Doe's genes play a bigger role. Personally I think it's 50-50 so just cuz a deer has small antlers doesn't mean that buck can't pass on a gene for a large antlered buck or mate with a doe with great genes. We have also all heard the story of spikes to booner so we all know deer can explode from one year to the next. If a deer is past his prime that doesn't really for into the "cull " bracket either. The only thing shooting a cull buck guarantees is that you won't fill that tag with a big buck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Politically correctness and being offended at it's best even with the Hard Horn comments LOL!! It's easy to get caught saying it even if you know in reality the difference between antlers and horns.
That article annoys me because pronghorns do shed at least part of their horns... And they're not sheep. And it's a magazine, not a clip!!!!
That is an impressive muley! Here's the 2 I mentioned earlier. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk I decided to put a tape to them again because I neglected to write down the scores The 6 point scores 108 6/8. 105 7/8 if you subtract the brow tines and score only a forked horn. This deer is 4.5 yr old. The 12 point scores 109, with a wider spread than main beam length costing me over an inch there. This deer is 5.5 yr old. Also, these are gross scores. Another pet peeve of mine. A deer grows what it grows, there are no deductions...
Not Necessarily. Depends on what the purpose is behind deciding to take a specific animal. The reason may not have anything to do with genetics, it could be age, sex or population oriented. "Management buck or deer" can very well encompass a pretty broad scope of actual management goals, thus...the term would be completely accurate. Shooting a cull or a management buck guarantees that buck won't breed another doe going forward for years to come, it guarantees that buck will not be burning through resources another deer could be profiting by and it guarantees there is one open spot for other free ranging bucks to feel invited to stay with less competition. A cull buck could be considered a cull due to age or population, it doesn't have to be from a focus on genetics. Here we don't shoot bucks under five years old (on purpose at least) so any buck that is old enough to be on the list is pretty much never going to blow up in year 6 by a large margin.
I never thought of deer having horns and I thought it was understood that antlers and horns were different. I have a shofar that came from a kudu. Long and hollow. I have shed antlers. An antler (to me anyways) is more like a bone. Solid to the core. Horns are hollow. Just my .02!
