That dog they are talking about cheyenne is my wirehair she is a very good tracking dog.Every year she keeps getting better we got 21 calls she found 17 deer thats a good record all the others were deer that were not hit very well but the clients called me later in the season telling me that they saw the deer or shot it during gun season.Just because you get a dog on the track dont mean you will find it but it gives you a better chance. You owe it to the animal to do everything in your power to find that animal no matter what the animal is deer or bear.We have a great web sight called born to track they have news and articals about tracking and trackers that are in your area or deer trackers and united blood trackers.

No problem Dubs, no arguing from me. I've hunted under allot of different breeds of dogs pheasant and duck hunting. My choice Is an easy one In labs but that's just me. If I was going to go with a deer tracker a different breed would probably be my choice. I know nothing about deer trackers though, I'd go with the norm (Robs breed) on that one I'm sure.

No worries buddy, no arguing here. The other part of this deal is that a great majority of a dogs capabilities come from the training and field experience the dog gets. You can take a dog from a mediocre bloodline and kill lots and lots and lots of birds over him and he'll outperform most dogs from excellent bloodlines that has only a moderate number of birds killed over him.

There are areas that use Labs, like Willow Point. I remember reading an article many (too many) moons ago about Willow Point and a particular Lab they used.

WH Dachshunds are not THE best, they are incredible and one of the best but not THE best. They are just a very popular breed. A lot of it is spilled over from German trackers. You'll learn that in the book.

Also, another reason why WHD are preferred is the slow methodical way they use their noses. They are low to the ground and very persistent. Another reason, they won't wear you out like a big dog will or can. Having a 100 lb excited dog pull you through the woods on a lead for a couple hours can be tough. Axel weighs in at 21 lbs. Understand they are not the BEST but a very preferred breed by many serious trackers.

I know that sounds redundant but I don't want this thread to be a breed war. Many prefer the Vizlas, others spaniels, labs, Healers and so on.

I wonder if it is possible to train a dog to track wounded deer and also recover sheds? Seriously. I bet it would be rather difficult but has anyone heard of such a dog?

Axle and cheyenne come from the same bloodline they are serious blood trackers the breeder we got our dogs thru wont sell you a dog if it wont track every year in the spring we start our training season. That is we put out deer blood we collected from hunting season. That could be the reason we find a lot of deer and bear.Once i put cheyennes tracking collar on shes all business she has a job to do and she knows it successfull or not. These dogs love what they do no matter what the breed is.Maybe one day axle and cheyenne will team up on a track that would be awesome to see the dogs work together. And yes you can train any dog to blood track as long as you start them young and they have the heart. At born to track we prefer to use little dogs easier to handle.

There is a guy that lives a few miles from me that has a blood tracker. I have not had to use him yet, but I do carry his number with me.

I know dogs can be trained to find sheds. I have a 2 1/2 year lab that finds sheds every year. I don't really know how he learned, expect that I had allowed him to play with some sheds as a pup, but he found a shed his very first time shed hunting. I believe he was 5 months old then. Again, I have never done anthing to "train" him other than letting him play with shed at the house and taking him to the field. Here are a couple pictures of him

His first find ever - Feb 2007

My cousin has a lab that is unbelieveable. I have seen that dog make some amazing recoveries. He has caught and held down several wounded deer that were still alive. Of course he is huge, I would guess well over 100 lbs.
