Cool article. Can honestly say I’ve only heard this one time. Well multiple times in one setting. Last year a nice 4 1/2 year old 140” 8 point I called whitey had a doe pegged on The evening of Halloween. I, being the over zealous archer I am, thought it was a good idea to try to get my first deer with a recurve on the best land I’ve ever stepped foot on in the middle of the rut ha. The doe completely emerged herself in the honey suckle right below me while whitey and a forkie were just staring her down like a piece of meat (jokes on them) anyway. Whitey let’s out a snort and wheeze. 25 yards from me..I couldn’t believe it. He was just sitting there quartered to me and I was froze up. He continues to do it 3 or 4 more times and I hear something to my left. It’s an absolute giant! Old old huge bodied deer. Big heavy chocolate rack that I’ve never seen before. They do the stare down and whitey quickly backs down. The big boy takes the rein and comes right under me at 8 yards and starts to make a scrape. I’m losing my mind at this point..I raise my recurve to get into shooting position when suddenly, “tink.” My bottom limb barely knicks my climbers rail. He scurries off out to 25 and I knew it was now or never. I pick a spot. Focused extremely hard..when I shot the arrow was going directly for him. But in my slight lack of confidence the arrow fell short and went right below the big fella giving him a haircut. That was the last deer I shot at with my recurve.
