in my backyard there is a field that i dont own but my property butts up against it and all the deer tend to stay in the field. i want to find a way to attract the deer from the field onto my own property. baiting is not allowed in my zone of CT and i do not want to bait anyways. is there a certain deer attractants that work? i was also thinking maybe a small micro plot. i never planted any food plots before so if i was to plant something whats the best for a micro plot? any information would be much appreciated.

Well if you simply wanna get an inventory on what animals are around, heres something that would work for you:
    http://www.monsterraxx.com/page/monster-raxx-whitetail-magnet
Just spray it on some natural forage and set up a trail camera. Maybe Tom L. himself can tell you about this product.
As for micro plots, I say clover would be your best bet since its browse resistant. But after the first few frosts you may have, it will turn yellow and the deer wont hit it as much, if at all. Good luck!

Try Vanilla Extract mixed with some oil and water then spray all over shrubs and low hanging branches. It’s not baiting but just as affective. It’s a very cheap way to attract the deer. I tried it last year between sits/hunts and my trail camera pictures showed deer licking and sniffing everything just hours after I sprayed it. There are several older post on the subject "Vanilla Extract" from experienced users, just search for that title. Best of luck to yah.

Ok so what are the proportions?

    1 flask / 1 oz vanilla?

    1 cup / 8 oz water?

    1/4 cup / 2 oz salad oil?

Be careful...study your laws. IN states that anything be it liquid or solid placed/sprayed or carried into the woods with the intent to be consumed by deer (licking would count) is illegal the 10 days leading up to the season and then throughout the season. Just make sure even sprays aren't illegal.

75% Immitation Vanilla 25% Soy or Vege oil , that will do the trick ...........if you wanna get tricky try this , take a half gallon jug put in 3 ounces of amonia , 3 ounces of Immitation Vanilla and top it off with some distilled water , let it sit for about a week shaking it up once a day , spray it in your scrapes or mock scrapes .......there is a well known company not mentioning the name that uses a simillar to same mix that is there so called synthetic blend that people are paying alot of money for .....lol......and it works trust me , we all know that urine breaks down to amonia .

Like I mentioned before I used it one time but I forgot to spray it before/while I was hunting, so sprayed it on my way out right in front of my trail camera. I didn't save any of the footage but it's true. Even if it’s illegal to use while hunting you can start spraying now and just quit when it becomes illegal, but in my opinion it’s not like deer don't already eat leafs, we are simply turning them into salads with fatty dressing. I'd say give it a try and see what happens it can't hurt especially this early.

This is always a tricky subject and every one seems to have a different opinion on each term. In my opinion planting a food plot is not baiting you arent going out and dumping a bag of corn for the deer to eat. CWD is in the soil and only a SMALL% of deer can get the disease(less than 5%) the DNR in a few states used this as a scare tactic to help wipe out large herds of deer with out hunters fighting it much.

If you want to spray an attractant to draw deer in with out putting any food I have not found anything to work better than Monster Raxx Whitetail Magnet or Apple Harvest. Spray it on the vegetation and put a camera on it. If you are going to plant a small food plot I would use clover also, but make sure it is a big enough area so the deer wont over browse.

Been doing this throughout our clover plot now and then...monitoring and going to do a post on it. Legal for us here in IN as long as we stop 10 days prior to season (atleast that was how the local DNR officer interprets the rule)

Wow! This topic turned into a 2-sided tangent.

I am believer in the Monster Raxx product (Whitetail Magnet). As a member of the winning big buck contest on this website last year we each received a gracious gift from Tom including Whitetail Magnet. While clearing brush this spring I sprayed about 1/2 bottle of the liquid about 10 yards parallel to a deer trail probably about 10 yards long in the new growth forage coming out of a 10 acre swamp. I returned about 2-3 weeks later to discover that those grasses/weeds were eaten literally to the ground. It was as if a new deer trail was formed overnight. I would like to also note that this is NOT a high deer density area either! During bow season I typically see 1-3 deer on this property TOTAL. It does have more deer residing on the property in the spring until the crops "come up". I really wish I would have placed a trail cam on this. I will be doing that the next time I am on the property which is hopefully another week or so.

im not trying to hunt over the micro plot i just want to attract them and set up a trail cam to see whats around. im not going to plant it and set a stand right over it. i just want to see what deer are around. i would dump corn but its expensive and you have to keep putting it out there and i dont have time to do it.

Rancid, Why don't we debate "baiting" in a new thread. The OP wanted suggestions because his state defines baiting in a certain way. He whats to know how to attract deer leagally to his property and NONE of your answeres are helping him.

Here we go again! If this property is in Illinois, I would bet that what you're doing is considered NOT legal.
    If not, nevermind:)

Watch the CT laws on this. If your caught hunting over food, whether you grew it, threw it, or someone else threw it and you didn't know, you can be in trouble. If its a farmers field your ok, but you can't grow just to attract animals.

    Deer want for few things.

    1. food

    2. water

    3. santuary

    4. escape routes when threatened

Try to provide as many of thse as possible and you will draw the deer to your land. Depending on the size of your property, you will be limited.

I just cleaned house. Nearly 60 replys to this thread have been reduced to the 16 that actually answer the OP's question. I already asked to take the debate elsewhere.

I just want to apologize to Matt and Fitz for going astray on Matt's thread. Like I said earlier I would use a curiosity scent to draw the deer in where you want them. You can put a trail camera on there to see what deer are living around your property. After alot of testing I have not found anything to work better than Monster Raxx Whitetail Magnet and Apple Harvest. A number of members on this forum would attest to this.

    monster raxx acorn scent.
I used this in florida and had a racoon coming down the trail and stopped right at the sprayed area and started nibbling and rubbing in it.
I gave the outfitter a bottle of the magnet and he used it at a feeder location for hogs.
a hunter shot a 480 lb hog at that feeder with his nose pscked full of the dirt from where the spary was used.
I will be using the magnet as a cover scent this year. Once you are up in your stand you can spray it on the trees around you to attrack the deer and help cover your scent.
I used buck juice the same way and had no results from it whats so ever.
buck bombs, acorn bomb, estrus bomb never worked for me either.
    good luck
