Getting ready to hunt new property in Ky and after doing some recon i realized that the only food source is a standing hay field. Its pretty much right in the Boone National Forest and the farmers around the properties are mostly cattle farms and i could not find beans or corn. Thinking about sitting on the treeline over looking the hay. Good Idea?

I don't know about Kentucky but I've hunted Wyoming several times and the deer flock to the hay fields there. I'm not sure if it would be their preferred food source in the midwest but I'm pretty sure they would be attracted to it. Good luck!

I've heard deer love to eat pot and that there's plenty of it in boone national...

If that's the only food source then hunt it. The deer will prefer eating from a food source such as that rather than browsing through the woods.

I would go up into the DBNF and hunt acorns till late season. The deer will hit the green grass after the acorns are gone. Or at the least pour corn, but regardless once the acorns start to drop that's where they will be.

I hunt over hay fields. 2 of the properties I hunt have hay fields and I have 2 to 3 stands by each one. Look for trails where they are coming into the fields and set up 20 or 30 yards down the tree line from there and you should be fine

Our farm is strictly hay and there's always deer moving through the fields during the season. I'd say the same as others, find where there coming from and set up 20 yards down the tree line.

Look for the Oak trees! Water is always good too, but there is plenty of that in the Daniel Boone NF.

It depends on what is planted. If it is alfala, it will be used heavily esp early season. On other hand if it some type of sorghum or just an improved grass used for hay, not gonna be used nearly as much unless the area really overpopulated and too much competition for the preferred food sources.

"Hay" comes from a wide variety of sources that can literally range from a 1-10 on scale of foodsource preference for deer.

I have been hunting for 19 years, and harvested many deer. All but one deer was taken in a hay field. Also like someone else posted, they are great during early season.

Hay field could mean a lot of things. If this hay field is an alfalfa hay field, the deer will love it. I am surrounded by beans and corn but have always had my best luck on alfalfa.

Thanks for the intell. Never hunted any type of hay field here in ohio. Mainly just beans, corn, water and transition areas. Wish I knew what type it was exactly. Ill check back on sat. and let ya know.
