Agreed Duke. I also found it interesting that he felt the need to toss this in.

I agree with Duke and Germ. The comparison is too extreme. I also don't care for his statement that it's not up for discussion because he has hunted in both types of areas. Anything is up for discussion, unless you don't have a leg to stand on in your argument.

Cooter's got a great outlook. If you're doing better than the majority of the hunters in your area, you should feel proud that you are getting it done.

Without having read the article, I assume the author's initials are J.E. If they are, I do agree with him to a certain point, but his personality is to exaggerate certain issues.

I agree. Maybe he is trying to compare the odds? Just as hard to kill a 100" buck in MI as it is to kill a 170" in say IA? Still extreme either way, but I think that argument might hold an ounce of weight.

I'm a little confused on that one. How many threads have you started related to scores and asking the scores of bucks people here have shot? But you don't understand why score is important? I think I'm misunderstanding you.

There like flies down here, you swat and you hit one. My defination of the SLP is Calhoun County and below.

The west side itself is a different dynamic then were I hunt for sure. That's what make his article so off IMO. If we put Vito in what is know as the Gold Traingle in MI, he shoots a 100+ every year:moose: Put me in the NLP and I would be lucky to kill 100'' buck every three years.

Something else he leaves out, and it's 100% mental and it happen to me. When you shoot a larger than norm buck by a lot, like the one I shot in 2006. The hunter puts pressure on himself to do it again, and expects himself to do so, and you become mental about hunting. You second guess yourself, you take risk you normally would not. It has to do with arrogance, you think you're the man and can get it done no matter what. When you fail, it's your location, other hunters, etc.

When we figure out our biggest issue for not taking better than average bucks for our location is ourselves, hunting becomes fun again.

The more I think about this article, the more I dis-like the message.

What I am saying is I see no point comparing bucks from one area to another. Not all subspecies of whitetail are capable of the same antler or body size.... some areas are much better suited to grow huge bucks than others. So why do we have to compare them on the same scale when they are not coming from the same enviroment?

I still want to know what a buck scores but it isn't so I can compare it to germs, dukes or my bucks.

Someone obviously missed the point. It wasn't a state-by-state comparison but a comparison of heavily hunted lands in a state with a large hunting population to a property that has been heavily managed in a "big buck" state.

I still say that comparing a 100" buck to a booner is out of whack. Maybe shooting a P&Y buck on heavily hunted land in a PA or MI would compare to a 170" on managed land in IA or KS. The likelihood of a buck reaching that size on either property would be very low.

It appears the author said something that's threatened some people.

Hard to say whose opinion is right. Hell, another mag I read that day show'd some guy in NC that shot a 166" buck. (New Record) Until that, I didn't know they grew deer over 125 down there.

That ought to tell you something.

The stark reality is, unless you hunt here, you have no idea what's roaming around. Sandra Bullock used to go to college, here. But, most people aren't ignorant enough to extrapolate from that ........that every chick in the local college dive bar - looks like her.

If you are that ignorant.....the above quoted portion will make sense, to you.

Very true and IMO nobody feels threaten here. My guess is less then 2 to 5% of us get to hunt the places he described as micro managed land.

It's liking comparing being a party at the bunny ranch and one at a weigh watchers gathering.

Which one do you have a better chance at scoring a hot chick:fro:

This is true, but it matters where you hunt in each state. All my buddies in MI who hunt SLP do so, but the ones in NLP and UP do not.
