Hey guys! I've had this question for some time now. It's kinda complex and should generate some good conversation.
I have always wondered when to use and how to use deer calls properly. For example, early season buck, doe or fawn calls. How many times to you call, which call (buck, doe, fawn), call when you see deer or when you don't see deer. I assume that the rut is a good time to call but do you call when you see deer or not or both? How long and how often? What about rattling? I've never had success with using a call or rattle bag. I had grunted at a buck during the peak of the rut last year and he never even looked my way! So i was wondering what everyone else thought about using call and how and when they used them.

A grunt call is the only call that I take with me EVERY time I go hunting. I've seen the can calls work in videos but I have never had a deer respond in a good way to one. I keep trying though.

A grunt will either work or it wont just be careful, if it sounds like a dominant buck it can scare off a younger buck afraid to get a whoopin. I use a TrueTalker and pinch the reed to grunt at younger buck and get a better response then I do with a deep dominant grunt. Sometimes they just don't care and aren't interested no matter what you do.

I have had lots of bucks do a 180 from 300 yds away and come in looking for the other buck, even in early season.

i use them grunts,, cans,, rattleing but when i know for sure a buck is in the area comeing to me i stop i dont want to take a chnce of spooking him unless i know forsure he is leaveing and not comeing iin then i dont have anything to lose but i grunt only before peak rut then i use a can and rattle some and have been sucessful in my opinion the grunt is the only thing you should use unless rut is in full swing
