I am starting to try and figure out what my deer like to eat. So far I know they like turnips, corn, and soy beans. I am wanting to try carrots, clover, turnips and maybe even winter peas in separated sections in each plot. Question ins do any of you have any experience with deer eating carrots?

I've fed deer about everything in the world. They will eat carrots, I don't think it's a first choice for them but they will eat them. I have a feed mixture that I use that I beleive gives them everything they need. Here's what I do:

buy loose live stock mineral "preferably a brand with 14% or less salt"
    50 lbs of corn
    50lbs of whole oats
    1 bag of brown sugar

I have about 10 deer coming to my feed site, I mix these ingredeints up in a 5lb bucket and put it at my spot once a week. I stock all my ingredeints in the off season when it's cheapest. You can also substitue the brown sugar for corn syrup so that everything sticks together. I have a bear probem so I try to put out as little sweets as I can.

Deer eat just about anything and everything. If I were planting the crops you mentioned I would substitute the carrots for oats.

Why add carrots? Seems you have a good mix now. Just wondering.

Thats what I was thinking at first but, figured I would try carrots. That does make sense though. If I have turnips, I don't really need Carrots.

So clover, turnips, oats and maybe winter peas. I am going to do a row of sorghum to use as a cover for my bigger plots.

Thanks, guys. Don't really need the carrots.

I guess I was thinking try the same amount of turnips and carrots in sections to figure out what they like best. If others had tried it and had no luck with carrots, I wasn't even going to waist my time.

Put something in that you know will produce some excitement. Do yu have a garden there?? Do they hit anything in the garden while it's growing?? We have deer in the backyard that love pumpkins, so threw some out on the farm. Not a big hit at all. Had 2-3 hit it, but nothing like at home. Gotta find out what gets you the most face time with them, if you know what i mean.........

I did my first garden last spring since my dad and I did one when I was a kid living in the city. lol Yep, not from around these parts. lol I had squash get gone like crazy. As a matter of fact out of 6 squash hill I harvested 2 squash. They would bud and start to sprout and bam disappear. I honestly do not know what ate them. My canelopes didn't last till maturate either and don't know what got them either. I guess I will put a cam on my garden this year and see what is eating this stuff. Could be deer I guess. Weird they would eat squash but, they are southern deer. May like it fried also. lol

Oh and I will have apple trees planted either this year or next. probably next year. I want to plant a species of apples that will stay longer so that in early season I can have some excitement. lol Probably going to do 3 or 4 trees in a 1/2 acre little spot and we have some persimmons I am going to transplant.

Since carrots might help there eye site, I would shy away from planting them.

I'm not. lol Just because I am from the city doesn't mean it wasn't a southern city and my dad isn't a country boy. I know all about some fried okra, fried squash, liver mush, country ham, collard greens and all the other foods that are foreign to many on here.

The first year you plant it, it wont get hit to hard at all because of the learning curve. After the 2 or third year they might start hitting it more.

Turnips is a definite. I just went and took a few minutes checking out the food plot. Tracks all in it. My camera sucks and didn't catch crap on it but, hoof prints every where. I had turnips planted on one end with a mix of brassicas. There are turnips left at all. They tore up the turnips. Looks like a tiller hit where the turnips were planed.
