Today the scoring of deer is nothing more then a joke........gross or net. Preying on the insecurities of countless guys out there willing to shell out hundreds of millions of dollars to try and feel better about themselves. The deer hunting equivalent to hair plugs, convertable Vettes, Enzyte and Extenze.
Typicals are some much more rare, for example...The Milo Hansen buck is the world record typical that is just over 200 inches. If there was no typical category no one would realize how truely special this deer is. There are hundreds if not thousands of deer that gross more than it does, and not a single deer nets more typical. I think that is a valid reason for having the typical scoring system. That being said...I don't believe a buck scoring nontypical should have deductions. my .02
What did you spend last year on "out of State Hunts"? Why?? Don't bucks have any antlers in NY?? Or did you just wanna drive the Vette to ILL and see if you could tag a non resident doe with your enzyte?
Probably about 2 grand..........what does that have to do with anything?? Because I enjoy deer hunting and have enough money not to care what it costs. If either of my brothers calls me and says......."Wanna go hunting???........I say yes before they fill in the rest. Not following how you see that as a negative. Yes............again, I don't see your point....................everyone on these boards knows you'd be hard pressed to find a guy out there who cares less about stuff like that then I do. I think you are confused...........you are talking about things someone does who enjoys hunting and seeing and shooting a nice buck (rare right??) What does that have to do with being obsessed with "scoring" deer?? I do shoot out of state does though..........again, no idea what the hell that has to do with the topic.
Scott, I agree net score is Not giving the Buck credit for what he grew. Although IMHO anyone that does Not care about the score gross or net one way or the other is either kidding himself, can't kill a decent scoring Buck, or is a meat hunter. Nothing wrong with any of those if that's what you want I usually shoot what I think will look good hanging on the wall, and my whole goal is Not wrapped up in the score, but to say it didn't matter would Not be the Truth. If it was the several dozen 110" class bucks I've killed would mean as much to me as the 130's, 140's, and 150" bucks I've killed and it just isn't so. The 1st antlered Buck I killed does have a special place in my memory but he was a screwed up little Dink. Dan
What's so funny? No wait, I know. It's funny that your feelings are still hurt from something 6+ years ago
Sorry MeanV... I'm not sure I understand this bolded portion. You think beacuse I don't care about either gross or net... cause I'm just not into the whole questioning a scoring thing... means that I must be kidding myself. I'm not sure I follow.
Duke, What I'm saying is score is the measurement of the size the buck is, like it or not. Are you saying you don't care what size buck you kill? If you don't then that's kewl. I just think it's easy to say I don't care, but it would be harder if the size of the Buck doesn't really matter. It matters to me Dan
No.. I do care what size buck I kill. Let's be real. But the question the poster (Buckeye) posted was about how we felt about gross and net scoring. My answer still is... I don't care about either.. either way. As in... it doesn't effect the way I hunt one way or the other... cause I don't care. And this original question by Buckeye and answer by me is just that. I think you're reading way to deep into my reply. I never said I don't care about my bucks score. But that wasn't the question anyway. Either way.. carry on gents.
All my discussions are based on Gross - NEVER net. But for me, score is really only a way for those that cannot or will not ever see a particular deer in person - it at least gives them an "idea" how big we're talking. As for me, I've never had any of my bucks scored - don't think I ever will...the only people I'd share this score with come to my house often enough to see my mounts in person - too me much more enjoyable than the final number anyway...
You know, I find this topic funny, it's funny because talk is cheap. Like Jeff stated most HUNTERS don't care about the scoring system, until they shoot one that has a score bigger than the "norm" for that location. I have worked DNR check stations for 10+ years, anyone want to guess what the first thing a guy with a decent buck ask when they bring it in? What do you think this scores. At the buck poles here in MI the two questions are "What does he weigh" and "What does he score" For those who don't care, I have a question for you. Did you enter the buck contest here? Because it's based on score I have no issues with saying score matters to me, Gross and Net. I want to shoot record book animals, I am no where near good enough to do so, but that is what keeps me working harder trying to up my game. I am fine with the current system.
It wouldn't bother me if it was based on score/no score. I don't care about the score, and I won't be entering the contest, this year (or any year, forward). It only took me a few years to realize that trophy and rack size are not on a sliding scale.
